Guys with a week to go i know for sure i am buying the 16-35L, 24-70L

But the last choice is driving me nuts. I would love the 70-200 2.8 IS i want fast lenses but the problem is. the other 3 70-200L's are sharper.

The 70-200 f/4 and 70-200 f/2.8L are almost as sharp as one another going of the stats from this site.

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html (external link)

I am thinking that the new 70-200 f/4LIS must be an amazing lens if it's a sharp as the older f/4 lens.

Just by going by the archive pages on this site you can see that the f/4 is sharper.

Guys i do want the f/2.8 really bad but will i be happy, will i end up getting the f/4 for travelling. Has anyone taken the 2.8IS plus two other lenses travelling overseas?

I'll be making the order in about a week and i wanna get this right.
It's sounds like a good idea to something that has just came out as the IS compensates for 4 stops not three as the older IS.

Sorry if I asked this earlier but it's a lot of money and i gotta get this right.

My next purchase will be a 5D or 1DMKIIN.

You'll kick yourself in the butt if you don't get the 70-200 f/2.8L IS. The first time you handle one after you bought the non-IS version, you will know you made a mistake.

It isn't a good idea to buy a whole slug of new lenses all at the same time. You need to take the time to learn how to use them and each one's characteristics.

For a crop camera, I'd start with a wide angle and the 70-200. I'd recommend the 17-40 and the 70-200. Those two lenses will cover the vast majority of what you might want to shoot.

On my crop camera, I also bought a tamron 28-75 and almost never used it. That intermediate range inbetween the two lenses I recommended is not all that useful (at least to me).

After using these two, you will probably have some different ideas about what you want and may decide on some very fast primes like a 50 or an 85 for very low lighting.

So, bottom line - get the two lenses and then go slow while you learn about them.

Thanks for the advice but i am a fast learner i don't just point and shoot.
I think about my options imagine the effect i am looking for and use all the tools at my fingertips. Heck six months ago i never held a SLR and now I have taken 5500 shots and a lot of them were conducting tests and i learned something with almost every shot if not shoot:D

The reason i am getting L's I always buy the best that's just how i am that's why i got a 30D the best in it's range. My first two lenses are crap because at the time i didn't know any better and i wanted to start using the 30D as i got the body only and that's all i had left. When i bought my 30D i didn't know what L lenses where and today i know every one and all about them:)

I am planning to get a 5D very soon that's why the lenses i am buying are going to perfect for it and then my 1D in a few years.
PS: I am getting a nice discount buying them at once.

do the same as i did, get 70-200IS, 24-70L and 16-35L and don't look back, i closed my zooms lenses, all what i think is just a ff body and few long primes.
i love 2.8 very much, alot here don't care of 3.5 either

Hey i am really thinking of getting the 70-200 2.8L non IS instead of the IS version.
This lens is sharper than the IS version and it perform on par with most non L primes.
There are a few benefits to this lens;
cost
less things to go wrong
better resolution.

I am a perfectionist an i am worried that the resolution won't be enough on the 70-200 2.8LIS and i won't be satisfied?

I owned the 70-200 f2.8 non-IS and sold it. It's too heavy a lens to not have IS...if you are a perfectionist and you want to hand hold, buy it with IS!

The results of the F4 IS also seem to be fabulous though...nice and sharp, great bokeh even...

I am not convinced that there is any perceivable difference in sharpness between the IS and non-IS versions of the 70-200. I have the non-IS version, but don't consider the photos to be any better than those of friends who have the IS version when comparing actual prints. Even the review that you posted a link to refuses to make a conclusion because he thought he had an inferior copy of the test. You could just as easily get an inferior version of the non-L.

Buy the lenses you need for your current Canon 30D. Enjoy what you have now. Go for the EF-S 10-22, it is a great great great great lens with minimum distorsion. In the 30D it is a real super wide angle. You will love it.

Then go for the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8, unless you are willing to carry TWO lenses always with you: the 10-22 and the 24-70.

What about getting the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro? It is a super sharp macro lens and a prime ideal for portraits. In the 30D it turns into a 160mm and in a future Full Frame would still be a nice focal for portraits.

20D - 10-22mm - 17-85mm - 50 f/1.4 - 70-200 f/2.8L IS - 100mm Macro - 1.4x II - 420EX - Canon 550EX

I could have my 5D by February 07 :D
