This was taken at 5pm in early October. Stitched from 5 images taken with the 85mm lens on the 5D.

What a beautiful scene! I'm glad I looked at the larger version, definately worth a look! The only suggestion I have would be to use curves to give it a little more depth, especially at the top edge of the canyon.

WOW! that is a remarkable landscape! I have to pay a visit there in my lifetime. I think it's a little flat also, curves would really bring the ridges out.

Apart from the sky at the top right, the picture looks very good,as i can only imagine how it would look like on the large file, and i mean a really large file printed out.
That size doesn`t do it any justice.

I rode through there three years ago on a motorcycle trip and my pictures didn't do it justice. I can show this to my wife now and she can see what it really looks like. Scenery like this is why I bought the 30D a while back because I got tired of taking awesome scenery with a crappy camera. Now all I have to do is go back to all the beautiful places I've been and reshoot the pics.

Great job!!

Everyone,

Thank you for the compliments and suggestions, both are appreciated.

BeccaNH and Rumrunner, I tried your suggestion to bring out the upper band of the canyon and couldn't get anything that I felt improved the overall picture. The pano is is already PP with two layer masks for the canyon and sky and the canyon has adjusted with Shadow/Highlight and Curves. While it appears that there is a real difference in the colors of the top band and the redder sandstone, changing one affects the others. More to follow :D .

Dimitri, I agree about the sky at the top right, but unfortunately, that was where the sun was at that time and the backlighted clouds were just too bright. Between the clouds and the deep shadows of the trees there were about 4 f-stops of lighting. For the entire series of images I was able to get close to capturing the full range, but not quite. This is the converted RAW image only adjusted for Temperature and Brightness.

Now for the good news. I took a similar set, except that it was two rows, about 4 minutes earlier. The light changes very rapidly at this time of day. This was processed essentially the same way as the original pano. The difference in lighting is subtle, but significantly improved, IMHO. One other point is that smaller pictures can have a bit more contrast and intensity than larger ones. These panos are being processed to be printed at 12" X 24" or larger. C&C on this one are encouraged.

They are both beautiful images but I agree with most of the comments on the first. Thank you for explaining more about the picture taking process in response. It really helps to read this kind of interchange.

The second is perfect IMHO. Your processing has lent it great depth and all areas are well-exposed. Well done. :D
