Here are some gulls. Taken today also. No pp, just resized. I do like this lens and am looking forward to learning to master it.

So, are you now trying to suggest that we should baptize new lenses with seagull shots instead of duckshots ?  You seem to be very brave, mi man.

BTW, the gull shots are good and promising. However, the light you shot in was apparently not good, especially with a borderline lens like the Bigmah.
Based on what I have seen, Bigmahs tend to do well in vary experienced hands (a singularly good copy ?) in very good light.

  ... not sure if he was going against the grain so to speak.. I asked for other bigma shots... as much fun as the ducks are... I was curious to see something else.. forgive me?..

oh, and if you're not thrilled with bigma why?..

I never had the lens. however, a few facts or reports have come to my attention:
(1) f/4.0-6.3
(2) 1840 g
(3) 400mm & 500mm w/o IS=tripod
(4) Extremely broad FL range, thus perhaps not master at any FL ?
(5) Take a look at the PZ MTF test results. (I happen to trust those, some others might not.)
(6) Sigma workmanship and finish is ....well, not Canon EF type . :D

However, some folks manage to get good results with it, in fact I'd say despite it.

PetKal, the gull pics are there for Sari, that's the only other Bigma shots I have. As you mentioned the light was not so good, it was shortly after noon when I finally had a chance to get out and get some pics. I'll try to get some "interesting" duck shots as penance for the gulls.;)

I suppose you are looking for a telephoto lens towards your Africa trip.
I think there is one good and simple answer there : the venerable 100-400.
Many people, including myself, feel it's worth every penny of its price !

I would also have a 1.4xTC to go with it just when that extra FL kick is needed. However, on non-1D bodies you'd have to MF that combo which is usually not a big deal unless the action gets fast and hectic.

Gulls, meh.
Those aren't for the obligatory lens IQ test shot, gulls are for something entirely different;
Honing your own skills at flight shots, and testing your Lens/Cameras AF speed and accuracy on moving subjects.
IE: The Duck shot MUST come first, as why bother with the Gull shot if the Duck shot is "pooh" (technical term, try to keep up!)

Speaking of Ducks and Poo, my most recent lens acquisition (nearly 12 months ago now) was of course accompanied by such a series.

WITH A TWIST ;)

Well Cyber, there are several reasons why I should and do love you, but one of them is your always spirited (if not always artful;) ) photography.
Shott No#1....the duck pees like a pooch.
Shot No#2...."I can shoot ducks in the manner of Dante King".
Shot No#3.....A duck attacks a flock of unsuspecting seagulls which are very cunningly rendered as bokeh.

Either way, in order to give you just a little recognition for all the pro-bono work you do around here, on top of your overly strenuous professional committments, in a couple of days I shall start a thread dedicated to you entitled "Cyber Ducks Only". ( I need some time to go thru my existing material and perhaps shoot some new ones.)

fishyone: I like your first shot. To me, the duck looks like it is nervously glancing upwards, with its wings held over its head, wearing the "I think the sky is falling" look....

Fishyone, your first one reminds me of a dad saying to a little kid "I'm coming to get you..." too cute. Pete's third one of course reminds of a duck saying "there's an alligator on my b$#t get it off...get it off..."

Yup,l those lucky shooters are all over the Internet. I dunno how our Aussie shooter buddy Wayne gets any of his shots. Lucky guy too eh? Note the use of the term 'shooter', i.e. someone skilled in the craft of photography.

Why do you want IS when you are shooting almost exclusively from a beanbag in a vehicle on safari? Context son ... so important. Fit for purpose not fit for bragging. Sure the 100-400mm will do the job ... to 400mm  and if you want a lb of Namibian dust crudding uop your sensor   Good on a hot day tho' that pump action will keep us all cool :p
