ive got an eos 1n and i love it.

We have similar gear. Didn't notice that before.

I love my EOS 3. The only thing I wish it had was an on board flash for those times I need just a little more light, but other than that, it's like a 5D for film. I use a roll of B&W every so often and can kill a 36 exposure color Fuji 400 film in about an hour. Love it. I use it at events as a second body sometimes. I am getting a 5D, so I may give it up, I don't know. Keep watching. ;)

I could never do the darkroom deal.
It's SO much easier to just drop it off at Walgreens :P

But not half a smuch fun, and I bet Walgreens don't do 'real' black & white films

B&W in most cases has to be sent out and takes about 10 days. I absolutely can't stand the wait.

That's why a lot of people (myself included) use the newer C41 B&W films like Ilford XP2 Super or Kodak BW400CN, you can get them developed at just about any 1hr lab, go home and then scan the negatives in with a film scanner.

I do sometimes do my own developing of 'real' B&W films (Kodak TRI-X) but this obviously involves chemicals (and a dark cupboard ;) )

Seriously Stealth, have you considered medium format? "Now that's a knife!" as Crocodile Dundee used to say ;) . Cadams makes a very good point.

Until I get another dSLR backup body I still take my Hasselblad gear as backup to weddings. And in MF there's really nothing like a 'blad.

The last film I shot with it was June; now the boxes of 220 roll film just sit in the camera bag just in case. The bad news for me is it's a buyer's market for equipment like this and I wouldn't get much if I put it up for sale. The really good news is you could pick one up, a lens or two and a back for a fraction of what I paid for mine. Give it a thought. Hey, it was good enough for Neil Armstrong as well as a lot of Shuttle crews ;) - Stu

I agree with grubs. If you are going to shoot film you are better off getting a larger format negative to do it with. ............ From my experience 35mm isnt much nicer than the SLR digitals so it is a waste to hassle with all the negatives of film to get a maybe slightly nicer shot. Medium or large format is the way to go ...........

My 2 cents

Chris

Thing is, film is going to become a niche market soon. Most film makers will stop making film, most other companies will stop making paper and chemicals. Prices will shoot up and it's going to become expensive. You can still buy a brand new dot matrix printer but they have become expensive, used to be cheap throwaways but some companies still need them for physical audit trails. Same for film. This will soon become a moot argument. Once HDR cameras are the norm won't matter anyways.

Film is what you get when you don't brush your teeth.

I actually shot a wedding about 4 months ago with my RB67 and Pentax 6X7. The couple specifically wanted it done on film (he was apparently knowledgeable in some forms of photography). He didn't believe that digital was mature enough to get good shots. It was a treat to do but sort of a pain sorting through after to make the album. Nice thing was didn't have to have the conversation about a hi-res disk.

I do agree the blad is a great camera, I could just never wrap my mind around the square negative, particularly when standard printing was rectangular.

Don't you keep the film in a fridge?

There are some great deals to be had on 6X6,6X7and 645 formats out there right now. I'd love to have another 645 format, I really liked that.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Yeah, they don't want the negs since they'd have find somebody with an enlarger  .

And yes, the film travels back and forth between the camera bag and Amana.

I agree, when I first migrated from 35mm to square in 1974 the whole 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 neg thing was pretty wierd. Naturally you always ended up chopping off a little for the 8x10 or 5x7. But the benefit really came in when I started doing weddings and social events - never had to rotate the flash or camera! Gee, without camera/flash rotator brackets that would wipe out several forum topics and at a least a few thousand posts here  .

The deals certainly are aplenty out there on good old used film gear. I just sold my 19 year old Hasselblad 500CM, 24 exp back and 60mm lens for about a third of what I paid several years ago. But it had paid for itself, and I'm currently raising cash for a second 5D body.

True enough - it will still be used by fine artists, some graphic designers, certain specialty advertising agencies, possibly still NASA ..... not by the masses thoguh. Matter of what, it was a high school art teacher to whom I just sold my old Hasselbald; ended up donating the 4x5 enlarger and darkroom equipment to her high school where they still have a wet darkroom.

A lot of film production has been shifted to Mexico and South America.

Well i've often thought about picking up a Canon SLR with the great glass i have. For now, my old NOI*NK F3 satisfies me with the nikkor glass, but i'd have to wonder what it would be like to use that L glass on a film SLR. Good post.

I've just got hold of a Canon EOS 30 so I can use my canon lenses. I still have my Nikon F100 but I am limited by only having a 24mm & a 50mm prime for it.
Have a look on ebay, there are usually a few good ones going for quite low prices. It's worth waiting for the right one, mine is in mint condition and cost £60 :-)

Thanks for the tip.. Will look for one. It looks like that ELAN 7ne is only around $400.00 or so. might also be an option.

I think that's the equivalent to the EOS 30V over here. Thats about £280 - £300 new, the EOS 30 I have is the previous model but there is not much difference, just a few minor 'mods' as far as I can see.

I love taking a roll of B/W film....developing it myself and then hand printing. No better satisfaction when you get an ace print.

But for colour i prefer digi! The colour dark room is far too dark for me!
