Well, when they come out for Christmas, my 18 year old will definitely have his little A510 and the two little boys are getting the A530 and my oldest will probably use my 20D, but he'll be said to be using my 24-70 and then go back to the 10D with 28-135. The 24-70 is a beautiful lens. I have gotten quite attached to it.
He's not going to be using the 24-70. You won't take it off the 5D except to put the 17-40 on. Let 'im use the 50. Or bring "his own" camera.

Actually, 30D + 5D is a nice pair for what you do. Advantages in the field include shared components - bring just one charger for BP511s! (conversely if you bring only one charger, that charger will quit on you. Bring both but at least you have redundancy)
Amen to that. My charger fried while we were in Greece. Fortunately I had 6-7 batteries in addition to the ones in the cameras, our tour guide owned (but her nephew commandeered) a 5D and I was going to borrow the charger from that, but I found a shop in Rhodes with a reasonably-priced charger. Actually one in Patmos had a 20D NIB and was willing to pull the charger out for me to use. Unfortunately the ship wasn't going to be around long enough.

Reach is good.. 5fps is decent.
There are times where I wonder what would have happened if I had gone down the 30D route, or whether I should have kept my 20D which is now a mere footnote in my Canon story. If I tow a 1D, I have to haul the GIGANTIC batt packs and the NC-E2 charger which is literally the size of a building brick though substantially lighter. That plus batt packs and batt usage would add quite a lot to my load.
OTOH, I could always use my 350D to cover for that as my tele-extender camera. I'd miss the awesome 45-point AF and when I really need 8fps, I NEED 8FPS. I never realized horses could jump, take off and land between 3fps frames of my 5D until I tried catching them in action.
The perfect compromise would be a 1.3X, 45-point AF, weather-sealed WITHOUT grip camera that takes BP511A's. Wouldn't need the extra space for the grip. 5D single-handed control set, 2.5" LCD, f/8 center AF point for using things like the 100-400 with teleconverter (
WILL AF on 1-series with TC).

Actually..... a 5D successor would do that for me. You can 'digital 1.3X' a 5D image, because since it has the exact same 8.2 micron pitch that the 1D M2/N sensors have, you can do a 8MP crop in software later. I can even get it done automatically (cobbled some scripts to do automated image processing). If the 5D would do 5fps, that would be heaven - might never have bought a 1D in that case. Rumor has it that Canon may give it the 45-point Area AF engine. If they do that, I would be on the preorder list and the only thing that can slow me down is Visa saying "CARD DECLINED"

I agree - I'd like a "super-5D" with more fps, f/8 AF and more AF points. I don't particularly like the extra bulk of the 1-series when I'm packing for travel and having a common battery size is definitely a plus even if you do carry dual chargers. The BP-511 onews are so small tit's not bad.

Ordering my 5D. Don't know if I'll open it before Christmas.

Are you going to wait until Christmas to use it, really?
Whether you use it this weekend or not, we expect to see it on the 2nd for the Christmas lights at the Temple and Brookside.
I'm calling the 85 1.8 and 24-105 my presents this year. Only problem with the 70-200 is close focus isn't close enough for interior small dog shots and the 24-70 on the 5D doesn't have the reach. Slap the 24-105 on the 20D and I'm covered. I suspect the 85's going to end up being another one of my "insurance primes" that I practically never use. But PPE code knocked $100 off the 24-105 at B&H, and double rebate brings it down another $100 to under $1K. I've also sent the B&H wish list off to my wife and sisters. It's only the small stuff I usually tack onto a regular order anyhow - tripod socket threaded adapters, QR plates, cables and the like.
