My 18-55 S lens has a bunch of lint in it so I'm thinking about giving it a go.Apart from that the next best thing would be when i sawed of a cast on my arm and removed 6 stitches from my knee on a saturday night so I could race on Sunday.(MX)

See my post above... I used a cheapo razor knife to pop it out.... I think some sand or something must have gotten in there and wouldn't come out with the rocket blower or even canned air. I popped it out, and it was all scarred up, so I smoothed it off, and used a dot of glue to hold it back in place... Works beautifully since!

i wonder if thats what heppened its funny that both of the buttons would do that...thats how it was when i bought it 2nd hand

Probably 13mm ;)

No, Landrovers of that age (1959 in my case) were all built in the UK way before The European Union and the metric system etc. were introduced, in fact I believe some nuts and bolts were the old 'whitworth' sizes.

If your really interested...

I took a piece of crap pheonix zoom apart before cause the motor was binding when it focused. Don't think I would do it with a good one though. And sure wouldn't tear apart a DSLR.

Check this out... it's about IR conversion, but there's instructions for pulling the camera apart.

From memory those buttons just use those little rubber hat type things inside. Sometimes they go out of place or drop out completely. I know it happened on my EOS100 once. Not too hard to fix, but you have to take most of the casing off to get to it.

If it were L or something of similar calibre, I'd just take for a service too.

You'd be surprised how easy it is to pull Canon lenses apart though. They are well made as far as servicability goes.

This thread seems to have gone a little stale, but I fixed the 28-80 MkI that I was working on... When I bought it, the AF didn't work. It would try to move, but just not get anywhere. Anyway, I stripped it fully down (even disassembled the ring USM - quite an interesting design) but couldn't find any noticeable physical faults which made me think it was the circuit board - unfortunately no replacements available.

I put some conductive paint over the connection points on the USM just in case and reassembled and guess what...? It worked!! Mark another success up for me.

Anyone else had a win recently?

Hi photobitz, I've got an 85/1.8 USM with a broken AF and in nead of a clean.

Just wondered where do you start with taking the lens apart to get to the ring-usm? Do you need any specialised tools or just a set of precision screwdrivers?

I've seen a few random tools on ebay and before I start I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to end up waiting for weeks to get something small but essential!

Thanks for any help,

Steve

Depending on how much disassembly is required, there's no special tools needed except for a set of small screwdrivers and tweezers/forceps come in handy too. OK, before you attempt that... disassembling that far is a big job and there are lots of places you can stuff up and kill the lens.

That said, with all the metal mount lenses, you generally start by unscrewing the mount, pushing out the plastic end-cap attached to the mount with your fingers (watch not to break the clips), then unscrew the contact plate from the mount.

After that, it depends on the lens, but you usually need to unclip the flexible circuits and remove the PCB. Below will be a number of screws which hold the rest of the lens together. Again, exactly how many and where depends on the lens. I've never tried an 85mm before so I can't help you so much with that.

See if you can find the Canon lens repair guide DVD on e6ay and if you search, there are a number of online shops that actually sell the service manuals for various lenses... I'll see if I can locate one for you...
