Rules against brand bashing. It exists in many other forums, but not here. You can't tell a newbie to use the "search" function but you can laugh and point at third party lens users. It gets old fast. The comments aren't even debates and as helpful as many people are, you'd think they would be able to refrain from being asses on the subject.

mr clean you have confused me somewhat with this topic ive been on this forum for a year now, and as far as i have seen the general concensus here is, that very few, if any actually 'point and laugh at 3rd party lens users' in fact i see many instances where newbies are pointed in the direction of 3rd party lenses, and ive seen canon lenses 'put down' i feel that most of the views are well balanced, well meant with cost and user experience taken into account . only time i've seen people laughing ,sneering at other peoples lenses is when they are very good friends and having somewhat light banter between themselves, this for me makes for a well rounded and informative forum, and long may it remain so.

Settle down, big fella. Are you talking about someone saying that their sigma is stupid, or something like that? If they're rude about it, that's one thing. If they say that the "sigma won't get it done" or something like that, it's their opinion, although they should give a reason why and/or suggest something else within that person's budget. If people get rude here, the moderators generally "take care of them".

If you want us to understand better, make up a hypothetical situation/conversation. If someone said something about your lenses, you know where they can go. The lenses in your sig all command a certain amount of respect.

I think everyone should be able to air their opinion. People who spout garbage get shot down fairly quickly, and it's nice to read varied posts about things.
I find I can ignore trash pretty easily, and the f/4 and sigma haters just make me laugh.
Of all the lenses recommended to newbs with the 'what lens ' posts, I think if you totted things up, the Sigma 17-70 is ahead by a country mile!

I haven't seen anybody saying "yah boo - Person X is a lemon because he/she uses a Vivitar lens". I have seen people saying "you might notice an improvement in picture quality with a better lens" which is perfectly true and isn't lens bashing.

When I first joined things seemed very different and we had brand xenephobia dripping off every post it seemed to me. These days well those guys are in a very small minority and tend to stick out or don't last long.

There are always newbies coming along who get seduced by 'L' and lust after them and they come across like there is light and day between the L they have yet to use, let alone own and compare with other stuff.

My own experience is there isn't a huge difference between good lenses across any brand and the shooter makes the shot. Some will pay hug sums for what seem to me tiny improvements in IQ unless you are a big pixel peeper. I like most L's but they don't often offer much in the way of added value compared to their very best rivals if you are an amateur shooting in pretty regular conditions. All five I have owned I have sold and only the 24-105mm IS L seemed exceptional to me in terms of bang per buck.

So, I think most shooters have have used a range of gear in a range of situations see any negative comments across non-Canon brands as uninformed and ignorant ... or just mischief making, but who am I to get worried about that ;-)a I just think I'm more important than my lenses and I don't need that much icing on the cake. Some do.

I agree completely. Also, it seems to me that the things that have improved my photography the most are the things that have cost the least.:D

I do not notice a lot of bashing going on here, unless it is in good fun between people who already know each other. There are good and bad lenses of every brand.

very true.. I don't really see brand bashing across third party lenses... I think that everybody is going to like and dislike certain pieces of glass... regardless of the reason... But, I don't hear 'sigma is all crap'.. or 'don't go anywhere near Tamron'... there is always a lot of folks suggesting L but thats to be expected..

sure you can... but, if we say that every time a new member wants to ask a question the forum would get very quiet..

No. From the rules:

"If you know an answer to a question either answer it or say nothing. Giving newbies blunt answers like "search the forum" is not allowed - please use the typing effort to giving the answer instead. Or just give the link to that post you wished the newbie should have searched for. Respect newbies - you were a newbie once."

Guys, we're just talking with each other here. Mr Clean has yet to come back with any replies or examples. I suggest we let this thread die until such time as he returns.

There always has been and always will be the us vs them threads. Most of these are tongue in cheek. Every now and then you will see the person that says they wouldn't be caught dead shooting with a Nikon and unforetuneately I think they were serious. I personally don't see the need for it but to each their own.

On a separate note, if everyone actually read the rules of the forum, they would be surprised what is in there. The search thing has been in there for awhile. I personally like No. 4 . Think twice, hit the enter button once.
