Yeah that's the Mark II. The only other 50 in production right now is the 50mm f/1/4 which I have and like. There's also an L with f/1.2 aperture out now...but I don't think it's actually available yet. Someone will come along and trounce me if I'm wrong about that. lol.

trounce. there is the 50mm f/2.5 macro.

Save your pennies and buy the 1.4 lens
You will never regret it.
You don't list your camera but if its a 10, 20, or 30D then don't forget the 1.6 multiplier - this makes the 50 a perfect portrait lens.

Peter . . . . You don't stop playing because you grow old - you grow old because you stop playing!
Canon 20D ----- EF 17-40L -- EF 70-200L -- EF-S 10-22 -- EF 50 1.4 + several lesser pieces of glass plus two eyes.

I certainly would not spend any extra cash to buy the old Mark I 50 1.8 - the optics are identical, the AF motor is the same, and to the best of my limited knowledge a plastic mount and the lack of a distance scale has never yet adversely affected image quality. this lens is so light that a plastic mount is totally irrelevant. Flimsy build, yes, but is there another lens available that could be replaced so cheaply, for less than it's repair cost? Drop or hit any lens, even an L, and the chances are some damage is likely.

The 50 1.4 is a great lens, but if you're not sure about the focal length then go for the 1.8 - it is really sharp, and for the money, unbeatable.

TROUNCE!

Shop here in Oz has allready reduced the price once. It'll have to come down a fair bit more before I'd consider.

Interesting to look at Canons MTF charts - 50 1.8 chart looks better than 50 1.4. My copies seem to match the charts.

Actually im going to be in AUS in 1 week, maybe i will shop there, how much for the 1.2 down under. Also how much can i expect to pay for a 1.4 in the states, is it worth the extra bucks of the 75.00 for the 1.8. BTW i dont have my gear posted because i dont know how to do it. give me the link for adding that. thanks

I see the 50mm f1.8 II for $70.ish and the f1.4 USM for $319.00, that's a big dollar increase. The f1.8 appears to not have USM, how is that different/inferior?
