I can't really "judge" it on this crap laptop screen, but I can tell you it's definitely a lens worth having if you can't swing the L. Loooong on a crop, but nice glass!

Mine ships on Monday. ;-)a I'm trying the 35/85 combo for a while and see how creative I get.

I'm not too excited about getting this lens, but I suppose it kinda has to be as good as the 50 1.4, right? I'm getting the L when I have the cash, but until then, this should do just fine.

Hey Ronald, I think I can safely say you'll hold yourself back more than the lens will.

It was a tough decision- (50 1.4 or 85 1.8). I had the 50 1.8 before and was not in love with that focal length on a crop body. Also, I looked at pictures from the 50 1.4, 85 1.8 and 100 2.0 wide open. the only lens that consistently showed great shots was the 85.

Ron, I live in Westport, Ct. It takes me about 25 minutes to hit Westchester on the Merrit/ Hutch.

Ron lives somewhere about mid state, just about 30-40 miles north of the PA border. That area is near Binghamton, which is about 4 hours from NYC.

Ronald, the 85 is amazing for bokeh. If you need that, you've got a great lens. The 1.2 version may be worth the investment if you use that length a lot. I haven't really used my 85 very much, but I love it every time I take it out. It's solid and is like a small "brick". On the 5D, it should be WOW, at least I'm hoping. I'm going to do Christmas portraits starting next week and yes, as a service project. All money goes to charity. I take the pictures, people pay for the prints and donate to a cause. GEE, don't get mad at me.

IMHO, it's a better lens than the 50/1.4. But also very different. Frankly, on a FF camera, the 50 strikes me as being mildly wide angle. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

You're the one that lived north of the border. I'm ON the border. I can see PA out my window. ;-)a
