I have been out 2 days now playing with my camera and 100mm macro and a lot of my pics seem blown out. If I were to get a uv or polarizer filer, what size would I need?
Thanks in advance.

My gear: 5D MII, 24-105, 70-200 2.8L 580EX,Canon 100mm 2.8, 4, Canon 18-55, and stuff.

While I look it up:

Look on the front of the lens, it should have it somewhere...

First of all, no UV or polarizing filter will keep your photo from being "blown out". That is done by controlling the exposure.

Conventional screw-in filters are sized by the diameter of the threads that connect them to a lens. If you look at the front of your lenses, you will see something like Φ77mm printed somewhere around the front element. This example shows that the filter thread size is 77mm.

Thanks in advance.

If you are doing macro work you can often get over exposure because the subject is often surounded by dark background, much more of an issue with flash but it can happen with ambient light.

Secondly, lots of surfaces of flowers and bugs are shiny, you need to acount for that in the exposure, a polarizer might help but can be difficult to use with insect work.

Its work having a protective UV on a macro lens if you are poking about in the undergrowth. This will not imact the IQ noticably if you use a high quality multicoated one like Hoya HMC or B+W MRC. But the UV will not help with overexposure.

My recommendation would be to shoot RAW for maximum sensor latitude and dynamic range and to chimp regularly and have the highlight clipping video invert switch on the display.

Try these settings: M (manual), f/11, 1/125sec, ISO200-400. Don't shoot subjects that are in the sun, shade them and use flash.

Good luck!
