maybe you are thinking about extension tubes, not tele converters.

I'm a noob so forgive me. But some guy said to me that I can get a two times converter. And that would make my 300 a 600. Is this right?

Yes it's true, a TC will increase your FL and it does help your macro production ratio. Not sure of the math though, but on my 70-200 the MFD is about 39" @ 200mm, with the 2X TC, the MFD is still 39" even if it's now 400mm. Let me shoot an example for ya...
*FL = Focal Length, TC = Teleconvertor, MFD = Minimum Focusing Distance

Here you go. One at 200, one at 400. The camera position was the same. Both shot at f11. Keep in mind the shot at 200 is stopped down 4 whole stops, while the one at 400 is only stopped down 3.

I do not think you will be pleased with the quality of the results if you put a 2X on that lens, macro or not.

Thanks for that. Do you think I will be able to get real macro shots on my lense with a 2x converter or am I wasting my money. Should I just wait and buy a real macro lense?

"Real macro" is 1:1 or so.
How large an object fills the frame at 300 mm and closest focus? Halve that size - that's what you'll get with the 2x TC on it. Is that small enough? If not, you need tubes (as well) or a macro lens. But IQ on the 28-300 with a 2x TC will be pretty bad. A good TC is going to run you maybe $100 less than a macro - is that too much of a stretch? Especially since the macro will be f/2.8; the 28-300 will be what, f/11 with the TC in place? Pretty dim and hard to focus.

This is "near macro" with my Sigma 100-300 and 1.4X converter - not bad and does let me be about 5-6 feet away. If I remember the dragonfly is slightly cropped. I do lust for a real macro lens though...

Thanks lungDoc. But I want to see if the dragonfly brushed it's teeth that morning. So I guess I will wait. Nice shots though!
