17-85mm VS 28-135

Evening folks,

Small dilemma in the sand box that I need some input on. Recently I ordered a 50mm1.4 lens and by accident the company sent me a 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 USM IS Canon lens instead. I was wondering if I could get some advice regarding this lens compared to what you see below in my gear list. I’m thinking there is a small advantage of this lens over my 17-85mm, but is there 419.00 worth of advantage?

I suppose I could sell the 17-85 since it’s only a few months old, but I am one of those that once I get my hands on something, I tend to keep it. One thing is for sure though; I’ll be reordering the Nifty as I had my heart set on getting that lens this week. So if you guys were in my boat, do ya think it’s worth keeping the 28-135mm…How many find this lens useful? I’ll be headed to Belize in a few months and wondering if this would be an advantage.

There's a lot of overlap between those two lenses. The 28-135 was designed as a full frame lens, the 17-85 is essentially its crop bodied equivalent. I would only keep one. Which one depends on you, and whether you prefer the wide end, or long end. If you received this lens by mistake, why not send it back for the lens you wanted.

I guess it still all boils down to having a good ole case of lens lust. If it were just the money factor, it would have done been back in the mail. I'm just trying to decide if there is any advantage of keeping it over what I already have.

Hate to respond to my same post, but after posting I found a wealth of information regarding these two lenses right here. Package is done sealed up and will be shipped back.
