Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory (Updated Oct.31, 2006)

[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]
PowerShot A80
IMAGE: http://www.usa.canon.com/app/images/d_camera/a80_68x68.gif
IMAGE: http://www.usa.canon.com/sys/images/cameras/camera_red_hline.gif
This Service Notice will update Canon U.S.A., Inc.'s previous CCD Image Sensor Advisory, dated October 6, 2005.
It has come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in certain Canon digital cameras and digital video camcorders may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.
Notice of Additional Affected Products:
As a result of our continuing investigation of this malfunction, we have determined that the 11 models listed below, in addition to the 16 models listed in our Service Notice concerning this malfunction, dated October 6, 2005, may be affected.
Affected products:
- Camcorders: ZR60, ZR65 MC, ZR70 MC, ZR80, ZR85, ZR90, ELURA 40 MC, ELURA 50
- Digital Cameras A60, A70, A75, A300, A310, S230, SD100, SD110, A40(*), A80(*), A85(*), A95(*), S1 IS(*), S60(*), S200(*), S330(*), S400(*), S410(*), S500(*)

*Models added as of Oct.31, 2006
Malfunction:
It has been confirmed that the connecting parts of the internal wiring of the CCD used in affected products may become disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. If this occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image. This malfunction can be confirmed on the LCD monitor screen during shooting. The same malfunction also appears on the recorded image.
Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.
U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040. Support hours are Monday thru Friday - 8:00 AM to 12:00 midnight; and Saturday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (all times EST). This information is for residents of the United States of America and Puerto Rico only. If you do not reside in the USA or Puerto Rico, please contact the Canon Customer Support Center in your region.

Wow - that's a whole load more models potentially affected. That said, it's important to stress that this is not something that will necessarily happen if you have one of the cameras on that list. However, if the worst should happen to your CCD, Canon are offering a free repair irrespective of warranty status - so it's in the consumer's favour.

Most if not all of the affected CCDs were made by Sony, who really seem to have had a torrid time of it recently. This problem came first, followed by the infamous Li-Ion battery problems.

I wish I knew for sure whether this affected by camera or not. I guess, Canon just won't repair it if it doesn't and that's all.

*sigh*

What's your camera doing? And is it one of the listed affected models? If it's not showing the symptoms (IIRC, colour cast and lines on the playback display, not the captured image), then why worry? According to this Canon will fix it whether the warranty's run out or not. If it's not one of the listed models but is showing the symptoms, they may just not have enough data points to determine if that model's affected, so you've still gt a good shot at their taking care of it.

It's an S400 and it's got wavy lines and distortion on the LCD and the colour is off sometimes. Their "test" was if it went black in bright light but if it stays on long enough it won't stay black. But it's not just the LCD...the pictures come out bad too...lines...very grainy and I don't think the graininess is all me.

I worry because I'm not in the US and it's a little bit of a chore for me to get it to the US to be shipped to them so they can see if they will repair it...and decide if I will pay for them to fix it if it's not covered by this notice...and either way wait for it to come back. :-(

I want to take the easy route and buy a new camera and....hope this gets fixed too so I have two!!! :-D

If you're not from the US, check with your local Canon office. There is one, if not in your country, in your region.

I believe Canon are doing these repairs globaly.
I know they are doing them here in NZ anyway.

Fortunatly neither my A40, or the A80 have had any problems yet.

Hello, My camera seems to be having the exact same problem. I have a Canon SD100 Powershot, *and* I live in a very high heat and humidity part of the US. My images look just like the top two at :
http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html (external link)

Anyway, I called up Canon, explained that I seemed to have a bad CCD, and they said they'd fix it for me. No arguments, just "ok, go ahead and send it to us." They were really nice about it on the phone.

Jon, thanks so much for posting the Service Notice. I didn't find out about it by looking through the Canon website, but when I googled the problem, your post came up. If not for your posting, I wouldn't have known that Canon was fixing this problem for free!

I'll let you know what my experience is with the Canon service people. So far, so good... Thanks for posting. This forum is great.

So glad I found this forum and this particular thread! My less-than-2-year-old A300 began malfunctioning out of the blue a month or so ago -- images on the LCD screen are very fuzzy/grainy/distorted, and so are the pictures it takes. I, too, live in a high heat/high humidity part of the country, so even though I take extremely good care of my camera, I was still affected by this problem.

BTW I just called the 1-800 number and got a message saying the office is "temporarily closed due to technical difficulties"...

PS Those of you who have already had the repair done, can you tell me approx. how long it took to get your camera back from Canon? Thx!

I haven't had this problem, but things I have needed to send back have gotten back into my hands in about 10 days (door-to-door).
