got this yesterday. He just looks so defiant. any suggestions would be appreciated. this is my second time trying to shoot birds.

Good shot. Only suggestion would be to tweak white balance warmer if shot in raw and use the raw editor or photoshop's shadow/highlight tool to bring out some more of the black(shadow) detail. A fill flash might have helped.

I was trying to get a little more detail on the front of the bird in the shadows so I went under Image--->adjustments--->Shadow/highlight. You can also play around with curves in the same menu.

I really like this photograph. It looks to me like it might me a touch over sharpened. I would also clone out the little piece of yellow grass at the bottom. Nice capture.
