This may be answered elsewhere but I can't find the answer.

I've seen a few Sigma lenses on ebay which specify they are for Canon EOS cameras PRE 2003.

I thought if a lens fitted one EOS model it would fit them all.

What's the difference?

Do you have a link? 2003 was when the EF-S mount came into existence, so my guess is that this is an EF mount and the seller doesn't know that it will fit all cameras.

Is it as simple as that? My mate is using a lens on his 300d that he bought for a film EOS about 1998. And what about the D30 & D60? They were about pre 2003 and don't they take EF lenses?

Think we must have been posting simultaneously!!

That was my thought but I wanted to know if there was another reason before I blew money away on something I can't use.

lol no offence but where did you pull that out of. EF lenses have been around since the mid 80's.

not really sure what the seller is trying to get across in the message. but unless its a great deal on a great lens then i would say skip it and go for the next auction that comes along, or better yet dont buy from ebay.

I've just done a bit of internet research.

It seems that some older Sigma lenses don't function properly on newer Canon cameras and need " chipped ".

Does anyone know what this means or involves?

yes. some lenses (the non DG models) are sometimes incompatable with newer cameras and have focus issues... the lack thereof i think... you can send some of them to sigma to have new "chips" put into them that allow them to operate correctly, but not every lens has this capability, and thus its better to avoid if possible.

I emailed Sigma UK about this and can confirm that they won't upgrade the older lens because

" the parts aren't available "

Haha,this is funny!
Sorry for laughing (not at you). It's not often that the orriginal poster finds the right answer while all the respondants -up to then- are wrong!
The seller is indeed talking about the sigma incompatability problem -allthough he has expressed it in an odd way.I'm sure there are cameras prior to 2003 that may not work with the lens ( the EOS 30/elan 7 models come to mind)
