When researching lenses I knew I wanted a lens that was as wide as possible for my crop camera (XTi), and at least a 50mm tele capability. The price needed to be reasonable, but I wanted a quality lens for my XTi.

Which one do you OWN as your "Walk Around" lens?

Tamron 17-50 2.8
Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5
Canon 17-85 IS 4-5.6

I chose these three because of there similar tele range, quality and price.
I thought it would be helpful for potential buyers to see what we finally decided to own.

Please don't vote for a lens that you do not own.
Thank You!

I can't believe I am the only one voting for Tamron 17-50 f/2.8! It is great for every day use as well as in low-light. You know -- f/2.8 to f/4.5 is 1-1/3 stops better, this means shooting at 1/60 sec instead of 1/25 sec. I paid $499 Canadian for it.

Sigma 17-70mm

The extra 20mm on the long end won it for me.

I used to have a 17-85 IS. However, if I was faced with the same decision now I'd probably go with the Tamron based on what I've read. Neither the Tamron nor the Sigma existed when I bought the 17-85

You need to add the catagory "None of the Above".

And include the kit lens, which a lot of people retain for WA use.

I dont own any of these, nor do I want any of these...

But if i had to pick one (vote for one)... id pick the Canon 17-85 IS 4-5.6

Main reason for my pick is because the lens has IS, and IS is a freakin awsome feature. Not to mention 17-85 is a great "walk around" range for a lens.

I have the 17-85 - I use it a fair bit for landscape and casual flash work where I'm not overly concerned about IQ but otherwise I wish I had a f/2.8 for portraits and low-light work. Hence it's being sold for a 2.8 zoom. For what it is it's a good lens, though, it's probably taken photos worth more $$$ than my 50mm, even though my 50 gets used way more.

The 17-85 was the 2nd lens I purchased. Now, it spends its time in the "retirement community" re-living the past with its friend, the 18-55.:)

Sorry!
I guess "None of the above" would be no answer at all.

I didn't add the kit lens, because most upgrade. This is what this poll is for.

The Tokina 12-24 is the best WA lens for the money IMHO

I agree! That's what I ended up with. I doubt I would use the 2.8 all the time anyway.

17-85 here....

IS won it for me, decent range for a travel lens. Not the best lens in the world, but I have a sharp copy so I'm happy.
