OK, Malla1962 and Dewmuw have posted their shots of this kingfisher, so here are my attempts. These were taken at the POTN meet at Martin Mere reserve. Unfortunately the water, that the kingfisher was fishing in, is quite close to the hide but not quite close enough. Even at 400mm the bird is a very small part of the image area, so huge crops were necessary. These images (apart from one) are all essentially 100% crops from the originals.

C&C is very welcome, thanks.

4. This is the one that I could have made him a bit bigger in, but I preferred the composition as the blob to the lower right is the marsh harrier that I was shooting, when the kingfisher flew into shot, so I refocused and shot him instead. He's actually hovering there by the way and not just flying past.

Man this bird was popular! Who had the most reach. Was 400mm tops? I'm trying to snag a good shot of a Belted one here but I probably can't use a hide there so it's tough.

Looking at Malla's pics, his EXIF says 600mm and I think he was using a 300 and 2x TC, so he had the most reach. None of us got a great quality image, one that could be printed for example, because the bird really was just a dot on the screen, when looking at the LCD on the camera, certainly on my 5D anyway.

We all expected the amount of crop needed would leave IQ so poor that the shots wouldn't be of much use, but I think the pics 'will do' for web use. Obviously, a shot filling more of the frame would be of better quality but that was not possible unfortunately.

4 and 6 for me, I'm aware just how far away this bird was, so under the circumstances, excellent work.

Nice one Graham - i like the marsh harrier inclusion. I thought I had a good one of him with the fish but it is just a blur. :(

I like 1 & 4 best but they are all good considering the distance.
With the crop factor Damian had the longest reach with his set up.
My shots of the kingfisher were deleted!

Great series Graham, just when you thought 400mm was enough, this bird photography is a different beast altogether.
