Hey all, I have a work trip coming up this Thursday. Looks looks like I'll have a at least 1 full day in Downtown Amsterdam, maybe two. Just curious if anyone has any suggestions on some good photo ops, or just plain "must see's" while I'm there. Thanks for any input...

just make sure you stay away from the hash cafes or you won't be taking any photos :)..

theres a very cool chinese style pagoda (it's actually a restaurant) that floats on the main canal .... and the imposing railway station has amazing architecture and is a must see.
amsterdam looks best at night tho so that would be my advice..... forget the daytime (way too many people around)... get some nice scenic shots of the canals and bridges with nice reflections from the lights on the water.

I doubt you'll ever see anything like that in the U.S. The people of Amsterdam are so....FREE! (I'd be all for a female version of that, though. haha)

That grasshopper pub in the background is great on an evening, lovely barmainds ;)

I drank in the with Manchester United fans when they had their Amsterdam Cup tournament, was quality! I think the red light district is further past that pub, but I wouldn't know for sure lol

I never saw those urinals when I was in Amsterdam........

I loved the area near the train station (Centraal Station). Starting at the Royal Palace which is walking distance from the train station and going up and down Kalverstraat there are a lot of cute little stores. The street next to Kalverstraat is beautiful. When you're standing in front of the Palace, look for De Be Bijenkorf and the street behind it. Lots of pretty buildings. My mother and I walked down one street not realizing it was one of the most expensive streets in the world to walk down. All the stores are major designer stores. I took a few shots of that street. The canals are amazing in Amsterdam. If possible, take a canal tour. You'll get shots of the Seven Bridges among some very old buildings with history. I have a few shots in my picture trail account
Bring extra batteries. My mother thought I was crazy because I took pictures of everything. The artwork in the buildings is so pretty. The Red Light District isn't far from that department store I mentioned, by the Royal Palace. We were heading for that area but the rain started so we didn't get quite all the way there. There were a few cafe's though that sold more than coffee.....

There'a a million photo ops in that general area. Oh, and there's a park. Vondel Park. If you can find your way to that, do so. Probably won't see too many flowers this time of year, but it's a very beautiful park. And if you go by the Marriot Hotel and you see Marcel the doorman, tell him Debby from Canada says Hello! What a friendly man he is! And have a blast!

ETA http://madametussauds.webcam.nl/ (external link) I watch these webcams often. I miss Holland.... Anyways, camera #2 is the one street I was talking about. The Red Light District is to the right a few blocks. You can sit right on the steps of the Royal Palace. It's huge! Madamd Tussauds is right there. Kalverstraat runs on either side of the Royal Palace for blocks. Also, don't forget to go to the Anne Frank house.
