Here's the deal, I have a Canon Pro1 8mp 28-200L F/2.4-3.5 usm (says 7.2x50.8 on lens).ISO goes to 400 but very noisy. I use it for everything including kids field sports but it seems to short. I have an XT being delivered I got new for 500.00 but now realizing the cost of excellent lenses I'm wondering if I should scrap the whole idea for now?

Another idea is to buy a fair/cheaper lens like
EF 75-300 mm f/4-5.6 III USM to get me thru the summer and maybe rent a 70-200mm F/2.8L USM Lens as needed thru the fall/night games?I guess I would still need an inexpensive lens to fill the 0-70 as well.

Save your money and buy a Sigma 70-200 instead. It's a great lens and can be had for a reasonable price at www.sigma4less.com (external link) .

geez the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 costs $750.00 verses Canons' L for $1100.00!

I guess I'm wondering about the actual IQ from the pro1 w/L glass verses the upgrade to XT with a standard lens question?

Isn't a Pro 1 a P&S camera? If so, that would be like comparing apples and oranges. DSLR's are much more versatile for sports shooting. The Sigma, while a consumer type lens vs. an L, is an excellent substitute.

You say the old camera is "too short." By that I assume you can't get close enough to the action to fill the frame.

You might think of this as a process. Get the camera now and an inexpensive lens if that's what's in your budget. Then get a second lens. Depending on what you shoot, 200mm will not be enough. My son has finally reached the full-sized soccer field and my 70-200 with 1.4 converter is still less reach than I'd like. I'd like the 100-400 or some nice prime action.

However, the one thing you know is that the lens on your Pro 1 isn't going to get any longer.

a 70-200 2.8 from sigma or canon will serve you eternally better than the cheap 75-300 series of lenses, they arent worth anything for sports.

let me tell you, cutting corners=wasting your money when it comes to photogear. eventually you will get the right gear and wish you hadnt wasted your time with the crappy stuff, i know the feeling myself. it would be better to wait and save a bit longer and buy the right gear first (provided a bit longer isnt years)
