I spend less on this hobby than on my other 2 hobbies.

Looking at your Avatar, I must ask, do you also post in the TiVo Community Forum?

I've heard ice hockey, golf and riding are the most expensive sports.

I don't think it's that bad unless you're replacing your gear every time a new model of lens or body comes out. Hobbies that have a large up front cost but little upkeep are usually cheaper in the long run IMO. I've seen what people pay to go golfing regularly, and my photography, hang gliding and scuba diving hobbies combined look cheaper (again, all largely up front cost hobbies ... unless you go out on a boat lots)

Plus you if you look at it as cost over time used, photography is great. I take pictures almost ever day on my lunch brake, every weekend, and often while I'm doing my other hobbies. From this perspective, photography is probably my least expensive activity! Although, admitedly, I've spent more on my camera gear then I have my car :p

Well, 10-20k is also going to include 1 or 2 bodies, accesories such as a lighting studio setup - atleast these will lose value faster than good lenses. On the whole, I rate the resale value on my entire investment to be around 40-50%.

How much fishing cost for example? Any serious fishing folk here? Or hunting? Or skyjumping?

Flyfishing can be pretty expensive.
But like my Camera gear I hunted for bargains.
95% of my gear is Orvis mid to high end.

All of my camera gear was used like new with boxes.
All or most came from FM Forsale forum.
Saved a wad so I can't complain!

I don't make a lotta $$ but like quality stuff so I hafta bargain hunt.
Been very successful at it too! :D

Heh, I think buying used is a very very good thing to do if you are trying to save $. Especially if you live in a Country where prices are not as cheap as BH, and are able to buy from an American.

I've always looked at the price of glass that I want to buy and the 1 series and the accesories list. The list is rather long if you want a full setup with high quality.

But when I put things down and put down a price, a really top end set can be assembled for 10-20k. Leaving out real exotics of course.

My question is : Do you or did you have hobbies that will put this hobby to shame in terms of expenses?

Nope, I think this one is expensive enough. I believe that if you can afford it you should be limited by your ability and not your equipment which is why I have what I have. Now its just a matter of living up to the equipment

That's pretty much my take on it as well. Plus I need all the help I can get. If it ain't inspiring, at least it's sharp!

Bear, as one collector to another I must tell you that I honestly feel that even my humble 18-55 kit lens exceeds my photographer's skill. In other words, I do not think I can ever "transcend" , to use Connie's favourite vernacular, its performance capabilities.

I think it's relatively cheap. Even if you get the bestest studio equipment and cameras...

Say a Digital Blad setup and profotos, a cool computer and some space for a studio.

it all comes down to 60K.

On the other hand if you're shooting for yourself and have no delusions of going pro, then you can get your rebel a couple of manual focus primes and be DONE for 2 grand. After that you just enjoy the process.

The time for my hobbies is the most expensive part. :D

It's therapy. It's cheaper than the shrink. Anybody knows what a good shrink charges these days? I figure it would buy a lot of glass ;)
