Photography has always been second to the piano for me.

First piano cost $500 in 1975,
Second one cost $5,000 in 1978, sold it in 2002 for $12,000, but with change in value of dollar, lost money (Yamaha G2E).
Third one cost $3,500 in 2002 (Roland KR377)
Present one cost $7,300 in 2004 (Roland KR7)

Prices are in $ CAD, and don't include a few hundred in music.

30D + 24 - 105L + 2X Extender + polarizer + UV + bag = $4,000 two months ago with taxes.

Stay with photography, it's much cheaper.

No kidding! My collection of keyboard instruments (2-manual Flemish harpsichord, antique French pipe organ, grand piano, upright piano, antique square piano) cost nearly as much as my house!

The only thing more expensive in my life were those two ex-husbands of mine. ;)

You do know why divorce is expensive?

Because it's worth it.

and makes photography look cheap (just from my observations of others).

Photography is only expensive if you
a) try to do it on the cheap and
b) start thinking about what you don't have more than what you already have in terms of equipment.

Sports cars are a much more expensive hobby.

BMW = 1Ds MKII + a host of L Lenses.
Mods = Studio Lights
Maintenance = Accessorys
Fuel = Printing

Cars have a greater rate of depreciation, and forget ROI unless you hang onto it for 30 years...Even then it's a roll of the dice.

Very true on both points.

Also research plays a big role, if you just went and bought a 24-135 IS and later found out that Canon makes a 24-105 IS that is much better all around you'd sell it at a loss to buy the L lens.

I always 'over-buy'. I get what I feel is the best, and stick with it. I could have bought a cheap tripod and then sold it for a Manfrotto with a tilt shift head, then sold it, etc. But I went straight for the best and my first tripod was the Gitzo 1257LVL and a RRS BH-40 ballhead, a good 1k blown on a tripod. But I'll never have to look back, and it'll last a lifetime.

Fortunately we don't have Chavs here in the US. (Well, we do but the name is a little different)

I like to be able to listen to a radio, drink coffie/tea, and take a trip with luggage and a spouse. Luggage is necessary, spouse optional of course.

Yeah I tried collecting stamps but when I showed 'em to family with excitement they just rolled their eyes and told guests I was adopted.

ROFL :) Too funny!

which are?

Sorry about that. I get so busy sometimes that I forget to come back and check on these threads. My other 2 hobbies are collecting antique scientific equipment and rare coins. Those 2 take up a great deal of cash. I have spent the amount in one purchase on either of these hobbies that I have spent on all my photo equipment combined.
