Hi, everyone! My 1st post in the Critique.

Today I tried to use high pass sharpening for the first time. So your opinion would be very welcomed.

Pic. #1 - I did my regular PP with final USM.

Pic #2 - soft focus filter ang high pass sharpening.

We need to compare apples with apples!

When you've used a soft focus filter on one of the images it makes for an unfair comparison.

Pic #1 is a cute snapshot. Your background no matter how softened is still unsettleing.

Looks like images were removed . Don't know why.

I'll try again.

Images are still not appearing. I can go to properties and get the url, then paste it into a new browser and the image shows though which makes me think you have somehow disabled direct linking in your smugmug account.

Thanks a lot ,Mike !

I checked my account, and, you were right, external links were disabled.
Hope it works now.

it is working and I think the first one is better.. something about the glow coupled with the background and toy that is making it look too processed for not being a posed portrait...

I agree with Sari. I prefer the natural look of the first image rather than the processed look of the second. The sharpening is very difficult to judge with the different effects on each shot.

I too like the first one. The second seems blurry to me or seems to have lost too much detail in the face.

I have to agree with you. This is not this kind of shot that requires effects and filtering. It's just a snap. And sometimes more simple is better. It looks obvious to me now, but before I didn't see it. That's what good about having your photos critiqued by others.

Thanks a lot!

I have been experimenting with HEAPS of different sharpening methods, including some that cost a great deal (Nik Sharpener Pro). Funny how simple High Pass sharpening still comes out a winner for me. The others just give you a bit more control with a bit less hassle.

I've tried Nik Sharpener Demo but the price scared me away from the getting the full version.
I started experimenting with High Pass because I've seen some outstanding results without usual "halo" of USM. Obviosly, the shot I used here wasn't the best example. I'll try with different kind, maybe landscape...?

I have to admit, I'm one of those "sharpening freaks" that always think that the image isn't sharp enough. So if I have a sharpening tool that has too many controls, I start playing with it untill the image is screwed up completely:oops: But IMO it is normal thing in the learning process
