Hi all, I'm just a beginner so I hope you can bear with my limited knowledge. Recently I've purchased the 30D with its kit lens 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM and now looking for addition lens. As I would like to use my camera for landscape purpose (when travelling) I'm thinking of the Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM or Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM. Any comments on those 2?

In addition, I'm looking for a better lens to shoot my baby, general portraits, general travelling or perhaps in weddings. After reading some reviews, I'm considering the following:

- Canon EF 24-105mm f4.0L IS USM
- Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM
- Canon EF-S 17- 55mm f2.8 IS USM

The problem I'm having is I don't want to waste money on a lens that pretty much covers the same range or purpose of my 17/85, any advice for me? Am I in the wrong direction that I should be considering something like Canon EF 17- 40mm f/4.0L or even prime instead?

For tele, I'm also thinking of getting the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM as it's reasonably priced and f4 sounds fine for me in outdoor situation. My purpose would still be shooting my baby and prehaps some weddings, any advice on this?

Many thanks guys! Alco

I have the EF-S 10-22. This lens is OMG sharp! I haven't used it much, but when I do, I have really loved it. I've heard similar comments about the Sigma.

I just got the EF-S 17-55. This is a stunning lens. I need to work with it some more before I can say much more. I do know that this will work for portraits (on the 1.6 crop bodies) and for other things as well. Many wedding photog use this for their work-horse lens.

The 70-200 f/4 will do very nicely outdoors. It is, however, a little slow for wedding work as many churches are quite dark and frown on flash during ceremonies. For that application, the f/2.8 versions would be a better, though more expensive, choice.

For portrait work (your baby, etc) either of the 50mm (f/1.4 or f/1.8 version) will do nicely. The 85 f/1.8 is also very, very nice!

I hope this helps, but fear it just added to your confusion factor.

I have a Tamron 11-18mm and LOVE it. Great wide angle shots, sharp, and I believe a tad cheaper.

Next on the list is the Canon 24-70mm, test drove it and the dealer had to pry it out of my hands...hehe!

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is an awsome lens....near "L" qualityI
Use mine for landscapes also............sssssssssssssssooooooooooooooo Sharp!!!!
For all your other needs; go for the Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM .
A Great lens for your needs listed above. Some say it is heavy; but I think it feels just fine with my 30D and battery grip.

The 17-55 may be the best lens to use with flash ever !! I am totally falling in love with mine, so much so that my 24-105 may soon be for sale.

The 70-200 f/4 is also an outstanding lens. I would keep your 17-85 until after you get a UWA and longer telephoto, then if you still wish you can upgrade your standard zoom.

Thanks guys, I finally bought a Sigma 10-20 and a EF 20-70 f2.8L. The UWA is a whole new experience as well as the fast 2.8 on the canon. I also bought a 50mm f1.8 for taking my baby, it's great as well given its low price!

If you want the highest IQ and speed, I would sell the 17-85 lens and get one of the
- Canon EF 24-105mm f4.0L IS USM
- Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM
- Canon EF-S 17- 55mm f2.8 IS USM
lenses, and get the 70-200L. That should cover most of your needs.
