Hits real close to home!

Support thy local camera dealer unless local camera dealer is charging ripoff exorbitant prices.

I went on an expedition to find a 300/4L IS recently. Camera shop had a used model, non-IS for $1399. New IS was $1845.

To fly it in from B&H, write check for the taxes and everything, brand new IS model, would have set me back $1399. Let's not even talk about the condition 10 used ones........ $450 difference means I can pick up a small or even not that small prime to go with it!!

I moved away from my favorite dealers recently.. those were cool, they had good prices, sometimes a $50 difference (on a big L) so I opted to pay rather than ship it internationally. Besides the customer service was superb. Bailed me out on a dodgy lens that I really didn't like, took it back and exchanged it for something else and no questions were asked. I was soooooooooo grateful!

The locals have lost touch with reality....instead of trying to make a killing on major purchases...they could bump the daily supplies by a few cents, up the profits and still keep customers happy.

My local shop wants $800 for a 17-40L, $1400 for a 24-70L, $1700 for a 100-400L, and $2000 for a 70-200L IS.

They can just fdsjkal.

Ron, don't they know that the key is volume? Why with only a small markup over invoice on the 24-70 alone. . . ;)

They can just fdsjkal.

I played my highstreet shop's game to perfection.

My local independent camera shop (nice people but expensive) sell the 30D with Kit lens for £945 (about $1800).

My local Chained Camera shop - Jessops sells the 30D kit for £840. That is £100 off there, and the 30D body only for £820

Online price for the 30D body is £738, another £100 off

Now the chained store has a policy - They would price match any online price who has the product instock and then beat it by 10% of the difference.

So in theory I can get the camera for £738-£8 = £730 which is about $1400. Not bad, however, everyone at the store that morning's blood sugar must have been low and dying for lunch as instead of taking 10% off the difference, the tok 10% off the online price. Meaning

£738-£74 = £664 ($1260)

On top of that, I still have the £100 rebate to come ! :D which brings the total down to...£564/$1069
