Is there any way possible to download an image to your hard drive, modify it, and then put the image back onto your camera? For example, with an SD30 Canon? Thank you.

With a card reader. If you have an old enough camera that your computer sees it as a disk drive, you won't need the reader. However, if the edited image varies too much from the default in-camera picture file structure you won't be able to review it in-camera.

Are you planning a joke on someone?

How did you know? This is for an SD30. What determines if it has changed too much to be viewable in the in-camera viewer? The size?

I had consulted with Canon several years ago. There is no way to write any image file onto the CF in a manner which permits that photo to be viewed by using the camera! The camera has an internal database with information it uses, and that data cannot be reasonably replicated by external means and moved into the camera. The camera is not merely looking at RAW or JPG files to display images.

I was able to copy images back onto my Powershot A700 using one of the applications that came with the camera, but I forget which one, and can't check since I'm at school.

It has to change the format of the image though if it was not already from the camera, so it can't be used for storage - only for viewing basically, because if you transfer it back to the computer it will be much smaller than before.

Images can be uploaded to the camera via USB using the Canon supplied software. (Zoombrowser)..

The image name must be in the standard (IMGxxx) format and the camera must be happy with the way your image editor saves the files. There is no standard way to save JPEG images and some might be incompatible with the camera.

If this were possible, it would open up a range of possibilities, such as:
- Keeping a set of "stock" pictures on your memory card, such as pictures of the family, to show off to friends etc
- Uploading movies onto compact cameras to watch
- Uploading Powerpoint presentations to show on a projector without needing a laptop.

Pity cameras are not a bit more tolerant of the file formats.

I thought it would display any jpg file you threw into it's file structure. I put my 30D's CF card into my old old A40 point and shoot, and the A40 displayed the images!

Actually, that reminds me of a wedding I shot. My second shooter gave me his card out of his Nikon D70. I put it into my 30D (or 20D, I forget which) and behold... I could browse through all his images just as if I took them. Hit the info button and everything looked normal... all the EXIF was displayed along with the histogram.

It sounds like what was impossible with my Canon G2 five years ago may now be possible! Canon did confirm, back then, that you could not copy images onto CF if not taken by the G2. I guess I'll have to repeat my experiment and see if the old limitation has been removed with newer cameras.
