It is what it is. A cheap tele zoom. Does that mean it is junk and in no way worth getting? No. It depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to get a cheap tele zoom and accept the fact that the results will not be razor sharp with bright colors and do not expect to make prints bigger than 8x12, then go ahead and get it. You can make decent shots with it and you can learn and grow with it. The more you use it the more you will find out what you want when you go ahead and buy an expensive lens someday. If you want a super sharp lens with great color rendition, then get the 50mm f/1.8 for $75. If you want to get a tele zoom that will get you out to 300mm and get you out in the field taking pix right now, then jump on the cheap 75-300.
I shot with the 75-300 for years. It certainly is not a great lens, but you can make photos with it:
Ice Climber:
Piping Plover:
Mt. Washington, NH:
I've made 8x12 prints of all of those shots and more and they look great.
I've since upgraded to a 100-400 L IS and it certainly is a whole new level. Tack sharp and vibrant colors that the cheaper lenses just can't come close to touching:

Spend $70 and start taking pictures now. Hone your skills until you can afford a better lens later. By the time you can get something like the 100-400 L, you will know how to use it and will appreciate it all the more.
