Usher, by my standards, is one of the most talented young artists alive today, in my honest opinion. If someone doesn't like his music, fine, but you can't question his talent.

Yep, about 12 years on the trumpet now. I also have played guitar since I was 4, and piano since 8.

talented...cool
I started playing the piano at 8 too...the guitar when I was about 25. No trumpet though...

I did actually leave out one of my favorite singers, and my long time girlfriend

Yep..Mandy Moore. Forget the 15-year old bubble gum artist. She's my age, and man..she sings her heart out, and more than a few of her songs have brought tears to my eyes.

My musical taste is very eclectic as well. I like everything from folk music to heavy metal. Recently, I've been listening to some of the music my son likes (e.g. Hinder, AFI, Seether) and find that it really isn't that much different to the stuff I listened to when I was his age. And I like it!

Night Sari...hope your doc goes okay, if you have to go
I've heard Usher and the jury isn't in on that yet...
Liza...I've never even heard of the ones you mentioned that your son listens to...it appears I'm getting out of touch now that my kids have moved...

Nothing wrong with that! I dunno about you but I like folks whom I can carry on a conversation with rather than having it become a totally one-sided affair. If I wanted to talk to myself, well, I can do that any time of the day. :p (the shrink said "try not to"

I have very little patience, so I'll type as many favorites as I can stand to. You're close enough, and I kinda gave it away with the "talent" comment.

Normally, I like anything that can put me in a good mood, and this can range from Jay-Z to Black Eyed Peas to whatever. When I'm listening to listen, though, I like people that have talent. I'm a bit obsessive compulsive, so I've no tolerance for people singing off-key, overly repetitive chords/phrases, etc. I'm a musician, and I demand perfection of myself as well as perfection from those I listen to.

I enjoy R&B for one; songs and singers that make you feel what they're feeling, and understand what they're saying. Music that evokes raw emotion, and can make anyone appreciate it for the wonder that it is. I like artists such as Brian McKnight, Stevie Wonder, Aaliyah, Usher, and more.

Jazz, Classic music and big band era works, like Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhart, Louis Armstrong, Harry James (one of my favorites, as a trumpet player myself), and so many more. These artists and their music makes you feel great to be alive, and reminds us of the good things in life.

I'll admit, though..I do enjoy the "masters" as well. The great minds of the Baroque era like Mozart, Salieri, Bach, Stravinsky, and others that we all know so well. Truly from another time, but their genius is unquestionable.

Well, the first point I'm with you.
Never went into R&B, but I am sure if you found me in the right mood I'de be good.
Tried to get into Jazz, didn't work out I guess because I don't have a feel for it and it isn't my generation. maybe over time I will acquire a passion for it.
Classical, never was able to listen to it, I am sure like Jazz over time I could acquire something for it.
Rock, I never really got into it, never was into hard rock, there are the few songs I love of course, Hotel California, Low Rider, etc etc, but in general I'm not a rockhead.

Yup, that's what I've been telling myself. I got into audio gear, but realised there is no point continuing to spend time buying stuff and critiqing music if I don't like it and don't really have my tastes figured out.

very true.. or you could be like me.. my tastes have been handed down.. everything that I like is because my grandpa listened to it or my aunt or my father.. probably why I don't like new stuff very much..

I still think it takes many years to develop a true taste for music. More often then not kids are listening to a certain genre it seems based on their generation or whatever it may be, there are quite a few young rockheads out there as an example, and quite a few hip-hop lovers too. I am sure when they grow up they will be listening to many other strands of music too. I think to truely appreciate something like jazz or classical in general, you have to have a passion for it in a way, and I don't think that's something many people have at young ages.
