The referee stood in the path of this running back and got trampled. He took quite a hit! There was no penalty or anything called on this play. Is there anything in the rules of football about referees blocking players or is it just something random that rarely happens? He really got in his way.

Just like baseball, the referee (or umpire) is part of the field of play. No penalties. They just have to deal with it. Usually they are pretty good about staying out of the way.

Now that's a good keeper! It's way better than the blurry ref shots I get as they step into my line of sight.

Thanks for looking!

It was unfortunate for the runner, however. He could have probably got another 5 yards out of that run at least. In the end, that play didn't matter anyway, but I could imagine how upset the team would get if it was 4th and 6 and the ball stops 1 yard from the first down :)

I hate that so much. It always happens right when you're about to take the best photo in your life of a great catch. Then when you review the photos, you just have a big white screen at the climax of the play

Ya, some players even use the referees as blockers if they have the opportunity... :D

Dont know if any of you watch football lately, but in a recent game the runner was triped up by a ref and gave time for the other team to touch him down. It would have been a touchdown for sure. So yeah, that ref in the way either in the game for players or outside the game for photographers get a big thumbs down from me :D
