No one has recommended or mentioned using a EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS. I am curious about it's usefulness from anyone who has used it for tourist shooting. It is compact and lighter than a 70-200.

BTW. I also would probably go with the EF-S 10-22 and EF-S 17-55. I would consider the above mentioned lens also however have never used it.

Also someone mentioned bringing a 24-70 f/2.8. That lens would bring a little more attention than you may want. It is not small and with the lens hood calls more attention than the 10-22,17-55 or 70-300 mentioned above.

^ in response to the 24-70L, you could always get a Tamron 28-75 2.8. I have one, it's smaller and way lighter than the 24-70L... oh and a third the price. ;) The lens hood is pretty small too.

I appreciate everyone's feedback.

The 10-22, 17-55 are definately in, the 70-200 f/2.8 IS will be staying home. I'm a telephoto junkie who loves to capture detail on clock towers, etc. so I'm going to buy the S3IS and use that for my telephoto needs as everything I'll be using the long end for is stationary.

Low light lens- I've have the 85 f/1.8 right now but I'm thinking I will want to have something much wider. The two lenses I'm considering are the Sigma 30 f/1.4 and the Canon 50 f/1.4 but open to others. I'm envisioning this for inside cathedrals, museums, etc. I don't want to buy invest in an L prime as I'd rather spend the bigger money on other lenses.

Again, this will be on a 30D. What low light lens would you recommend bringing? If I'm leaving the 70-200 home, any reason anyone wouldn't also carry the weight of the 85 f/1.8 since I already own it?

Is it worth bringing along a monopod?

I'm wondering if it makes sense to buy a S3IS for her to use on the trip and for it to take the long focal lenght shots?

Sounds a good plan. Could cover candids if you take the mood. Equalize the situation with your girlfriend.

10-22 vital :-) Architecture, landscape, and humour shots of your girlfriend ;-)a

17-55 should then be enough.

Mike.
