I have read many threads regarding this lens and a dust issue, so my question here is simple: obviously I am very interested in purchasing one myself but like many lenses, it has its own drawbacks (my big concern). For those who have purchased this lens for the past few months or so, anyone experiencing dust issues?

I own it - no problems. I have heard some complain of dust problems, others do not - however, unlike many other lenses which have their own drawbacks, it appears that in most cases these dust problems haven't affected the camera's IQ, and that optically the lense remains excellent.

Another thread https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=238191 currently suspects that dust issues may be reduced by simply having a filter mounted on the lens at all times. That seems rather suspicious as a theory, and there is not evidence presented yet which shows that lens that have been immune to dust issues so far have filters on them.

I have read a lot of talk about dust-sucking as well, but I just don't care. If you want the 17-55, buy it and hope for the best- there really isn't an alternative if you're looking for an f2.8 wide zoom with IS. I'm getting one as soon as I can afford it.

I have used my 17-55 in some extremely dusty conditions and have had no problem with dust. The outside of my camera bag had so much dust on it that it looked red instead of black.

I had some problems with dust on the sensor, but not in the lens. Fortunately I had a sensor cleaning kit with me.

Mine is a vacuum cleaner. A magical vacuum that takes pretty nice pictures. BUT not as amazing as some of my other lenses. BUT BUT the Is makes impossible pictures possible.

No dust problems with mine either. It is on the camera most of the time. Unless the 100-400 is, seems I use these two lens for 80% or more of my shots now. They are both excellent......

I've owned two, the first one sucked in an unbelieveable amount of dust in a short period of time. Whether it affected IQ or not, I was not happy with paying that much for a lens and seeing all that dust. I exchanged it for another copy which in the same period of time has absolutely no internal dust. Why the difference, I don't know? I started the thread about the possibility of a UV filter preventing dust because that is my only difference between lens one and two. I thought it was worth asking just in case that was the source of dust entry but no evidence to indicate that yet. In two weeks of ownership of my first lens, I could count about 2 dozen specks of dust internally, had it continued I can't help but think that it could affect IQ in certain situations with strong backlighting.

Personally I'd take the dive, its a brilliant lens! I've had mine since September and i've taken it outdoors a lot (dusty places) and it has exhibited no dust. It maybe luck of the draw but worth the risk imho.

I was the first in my town to get one... so I got it when it first came out.
I have no dust problems at all. It's also worn a UV filter since day 1. Maybe you're onto something...
