Here’s a few sportrait type shots from some of the guys on our local Midget hockey team. Shot with my 1DmkIIN and 135mm f/2L. Settings were ISO 800, f/2 and +/- 1/500th sec shutter speed. I’m finally getting the poor lighting in our rink figured out.

C&C always welcome.

Great images! The exposure on these looks real good. I think you have a bit more light in your arena than I do in mine. I find I can get good results using ISO 800, f/2.2 & 1/320 sec. exposure, using a D-Rebel. If I shoot wide open (85mm, f/1.8) I find hit and miss focus, or maybe this lens is not so clear wide open. Great fast focusing lens though. I am saving for the 135 f/2, however.

nice images. good exposure, and nice colors. I'd like to see action, shots with the puck in frame, skaters battling for posession, etc... anyways, these are nice shots.

Nice shots. Focus and shutter speeds look good, and the colors are vivid in most of them. Were you using Auto White Balance or manual? It's tough getting rid of that greenish hockey rink tint. (love the way you cloned out the guy's stick in shot number 1! You barely notice it ;) (j/k of course)

From what I saw the one time I was fortunate enough to use an 85mm f/1.2, the f1.8 will give you an extremely narrow depth of field. Do you use AI Servo mode for focus? I remember reading somewhere that that can also cause blurring in some motion situations. (?)

I have a D-Reb -- I don't have control over the focus mode. The hacks do not correct this either. The 20D is probably in my future, as this is something you can control with that body. The D-Reb works great considering I would still be waiting for my first digital body if I did not have it. My 50E had more controls (incl. CFs) so the Rebel series is somewhat of a step backward -- except for the fact it is digital.

One thing better (in digital) for sure is the fact I can adjust the white balance so hockey arena lighting looks much better than with film. My local processor knew what I liked when using film, though, so he would make the adjustments I liked when processing hockey photos.
