Coming back from shooting some birds at the Albany Mudflats, I saw an
intense sunset from my house in the Oakland Hills. So I took a few shots.
These are with the 350D, 300 f4L, ISO 800, f4, AV mode.

1 View towards SF Peninsula with a ship in the Bay.

Great pics! I was trying my best to capture the same "fire" from Ocean Beach in S.F. yesterday. I just got my first SLR (30d) about 3 days ago and I found this sunset VERY difficult to capture. I took a ton of images of it and these were to of my favorites. I was either blowing out the sky or not getting any exposure on the waves (I imagine some filters would've helped!).

Hope you don't mind me adding to your post!

No problem Paul.

I noticed your shooting at a real slow shutter speed, were you shooting off a
tripod? Even with IS, 1/13 of a second is going to show a lot of motion blur.
I was using the 350D instead of the 20D (it had the 500L on it), and I was at
ISO 800 f4, just to keep the shutter speed up (1/200-1/100 sec still slow for
handheld, but better then 1/13 sec). The 350D will have some noise at 800 ISO,
but that easier to fix (especially when resized for the web) then motion blur.

Here's a couple I ran through Neat Image:

Thanks for the info! No, I wasn't using a tripod (I pulled it out for it's first use and found that the threads on the mounting bolt were damaged so I couldn't put my camera on it).

I'll take not of your suggestions and keep my eye out for another sunset like that! :)

Those colours are so nice they look almost fake! (we got proof they're not though... since they were captured by two different photographers :D)

Thanks Frank and montreal. I was glad I was able to get some shots of this
event. Amazing colors that night.

Somethings not right. Did you try to bump the exposure through raw compensation?

Faithless,

I guess I don't understand what you're saying?

These were shot jpeg mode, and cropped and resized in irfanview, so no
exposure compensation. I did boost contrast and saturation a little, and
sharpened some on resize. The second batch I ran through Neat Image
(free version) to reduce the noise. Here is one that was just resized,
bordered and copyrighted, without any other changes. Not quite as
intense, but still pretty dramatic.
