Hi, I just got a new 30d a couple days ago, my first SLR! :) I took these pics from Treasure Island last night. C&C?

Sorry to be negative, but I'm going to disagree with Rumrunner

Here are what I see wrong with the images:
1. Too much sky. Unless there's something of interest in the sky (like a great sunset for example), try and keep it to a minimum, especially for night photography.
2. Noise. This could be because of the resize for web, but it looks as if there's a decent amount of noise there? Either run it through an application like Noise Ninja (or even Adobe's noise algorithm), or choose a lower ISO. That said, sometimes noise adds to a picture, so use your discretion.
3. The city is very bright in the second shot, and also slightly soft. The trouble with taking shots at night is that your camera's meter has trouble metering for large black areas with small areas of intense light. Try spot-metering the city next time (maybe zoom in on it first), then recompose). Oh, and make sure you're using a tripod!
4. Composition. The city is almost "hidden" by the large sky and water, but this can be rectified by either cropping the sky out, or maybe making a pano to really emphasize what a great skyline it is.

Anyway, I don't mean to be doom & gloom. And I also want to state that some people might disagree with me on all of the above points, so it's just my opinion!
But if we all agreed on the same thing, we'd all take the same pictures and that would be boring :D

Keep at it man, and good luck!

Thanks for the comments AdamJL... not negative at all. I come on this site to learn! :)

1.) I put a tighter crop on some of the images and they really seemed to jump out at me more... good suggestion!

2.) I downloaded "Neat Image" (free) and it didn't seem to find any noise in the pics I loaded into it (input & output images looked identical)... that's not to say there isn't noise though. I'll play w/ that some more later.

3 & 4.) I didn't have a tripod with me (I set my camera on top of a newspaper stand and propped the lens up a bit with some napkins) and I didn't think of zooming, panning and stitching them together. I can't wait to go back with my tripod and take another stab at it!

Here's the first picture with a tighter crop and then, a sample of what full zoom would've given me:

MUCH better pics well done. The crops have really done a lot to help the images.

Good work and keep going, you've done well.

Looking forward to seeing the pano :)

I certainly like the one's closer of the city. Great job on them! Practice makes perfect, so keep going out and shooting!

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

Cropping really improved the images. Amazing what just a small thing like cropping can do.

Awesome! I like #2 of the first two the best...the clouds and more intense light pollution make it feel very upbeat, like you can feel the excitement!
