Run, don't walk, buy the 1DmkII

Even if you end up not liking it, learn from it, wait for the 40D this spring or summer, sell this 1DmkII , buy the 40D and pocket the cash for a new lens. Zero depreciation is always a good thing!

I have reserved the camera until Thursday
But maybe the logic is going out the window here. As Mark mention the 30D is properly more user friendly and much easier to learn on and I might be getting drawn towards buying this camera due to the bargain price.
But your sugestion makes sense to.
Hmmm. Got some thinking to do

at that price even if its too much camera for you you should be able to sell it and buy a 30D+ more nice glass to start. if you get the hang of it quickly then you have a simply amazing body at a great price.

I'd go the 1D, personally.. the resale value will hold better than the 30D if you change your mind later (god, I'd swap a 30D+$600 for a 1DmkII).

I think it would be a much bigger learning curve but once you got over that you'd have a great tool in your hands. If you don't like the learning curve there are many people who will take it off your hands for the same or for a similar price as what you paid for it so no loss... and the 30Ds are always available, unlike this offer :)

Does anybody have any suggestions for an all purpose lens besides the 17-40. The lady in the camera shop suggested a 28-135 lens if I wanted to keep the cost down.

You got a good point there Jim
