Hi,
two sharp shots, I like #1 best as it is a better profile of the bird. IMHO the colors look a little washed out, perhaps some more contrast.

Clare, the low contrast (I did boost it some!) is largely due to the heavy overcast that day. I have some shots of this bird in bright light where the colors really snap.

jorj7, I am really happy with this TC. It does soften things a bit. Shots without it are, as you would expect with the 100-400, very sharp. However The extra reach is handy with small birds. (With the 1.4x from the TC, and the 1.6 crop factor, a 400mm lens has the 35mm-equivalent reach of a 896mm lens!)

pknight, those are beautiful shots. Great detail on the feathers, and the catchlight is a nice bonus.

Concerning contrast/levels, here's what I got by setting the white and black points. It made the eye
and beak a bit too dark, so I restored them with the art history brush. Of course, It's all a matter of preference.
