To 5D or not to 5d?

Here's my question: granted it is subjective and probably already posed.

I am wanting to replace my current 20D with a 5D. Based on value (current rebate), possible upcoming changes to the 5D, or whatever other factors you can think of.....would you if you had the money in hand go ahead and buy a 5D or wait to see what happens at the first of the year. My current 20D is functional but just trying to decide whether to take advantage of the double rebate or should I wait to get the possible latest and greatest. I guess it is a value verses possible new technologies question. If a new 5D is going to cost more (with new bells and whistles) I am not interested...I am already maxing out my budget. Is it possible that a new version of the 5D might be cheaper than current 5d with rebates?? Hope this makes some sense.

I HIGHLY doubt the new 5D ( or 7D ) will be cheaper than the current one + rebate, or even double rebate even. There is always something better around the corner, if you can afford it, and want it, get it. If your 20D is serving you fine then I would not bother.

Definitely a chance. I suppose a rebate would give Canon a chance to get rid of old stock before the new things comes in then when it comes in at a price that is around the old one less rebate or a bit more the customer does not feel quite so bad.

I am not sure what battle strategy Canon uses with their rebates as I have not followed prices and such since I have only re-entered photography last year. Others may have a better understanding of the trends?

I would and AM waiting before i buy any new camera -Digic 3 should be in the new dslr's and although the 5d is nice any upgrade should be nicer and if the price is beyond what you want to pay the then old 5d will still be there and may well be at a bargain price.

Given the rebate (and potential to double it), and that I don't expect a 5D successor until later next year, I'd go for it now. When the 5D successor comes out it will probably come in at around the $3000 price point. Right now, with the PPE code, B&H has it for $2720, before the rebates. Get a 50 f/1.4 or 85 f/1.8 and the additional $340 rebate makes the lens "free".

I agree that the 5D isn't due for replacement yet - only the 1Ds/1D series.

Like the "PSAUG" code people have been talking about of late. Search their site for "PPE", and you'll get a bunch of items they have on sale in connection with the PPE show which just ended. The 5D is one of them.

Heck, the 5D is the latest and greatest in some ways. No better high ISO performance in the dSLR universe, period.

I'm waiting on the successor.
If it's as great as I think it will be, I'll buy it. If not, then I MIGHT buy the 5D.

It doesn't matter when you buy; the rumours of the next camera will start in a week. As soon as the new one is out you will be wondering should I buy it or wait for the next, or the next, or the next.......

If you have the money and you want it, but a 5D. There is no "best"time to buy anymore. Camera bodies are like computers now, its going to keep changing and the new will SOON be the old...

Best time is now, or you can wait and get tommorows gear.

Personally, Im going to build my lens collection before I go out buying more bodies. I really want a 5D too, as my 2nd body. 20D + 5D so I can have a FF and 1.6 crop camera.

But, the $2500 will get better spent in some good glass. Considering glass seems to stay pretty constant compared to the cameras themselves.

I'm for new glass. You have 20D already - which is fine camera. Let's put it this way, if you are 100% sure that new camera will make your images much better with the glass you have, then go for it.

Judging by your lens collection, you would save at least another $600 since you won't have to buy a 17-40mm lens. Your Tamron 28-70 will be the equivalent. However, if you're going to stick with the 20D for awhile, the wide zoom is essential because of the focal factor of 1.6. I'd suggest go for the 5D! With the rebates and the money you can save on a lens you are looking at $1200 off!

btw - how come you have two 70-200mm lenses? Why not sell the f4 version?
