If you like both, I'd say get both. They are excellent lenses.

That really would be overkill.
Good idea though.

Dave I think if you can keep both then do it. The difference in FL is enough for creativity purposes. I still plan on getting a 50 1.4 to add to the prime set. But that doesn't mean it'll get used more than the 30mm. If I could make your mind up for you, I'd say keep the 30mm. But it's up to you how much that 20mm makes a difference. It's huge to me...Hell keep both! DOOOO IIIIIIT! It's not overkill, they're both fast and sharp. Your zooms might overlap, but they're not fast.

I hear what you are saying but the 50mm has already gone back to pay for the 30mm. i really cant afford both
As i said above i only really need this lens as a very small do it all for when im at gigs or parties so one will have to do.
Once i have finished testing the 30mm ill make up my mind. its looking like i might keep it as the FL is good, just as long as its sharp.
I have been snapping away tonight at home without flash and so far im not over them moon but i must admit this isnt something i would normaly do at home anyway and i have yet to look at the shots on my PC.

You will miss more shots having a lens too long than a lens too short. I love my 50/1.4, but it sounds like it's not the lens for you.

True but as my style of shooting is to zoom in i think the 50mm will be more in keeping with my style. of course i will miss a few shots but I must admit im more of a snapper, so i tend to make the best of things. i nearly always crop my shots so i might get a way with 50mm for most shots and need to crop less.

If you bought a good 50mm 1.4 and it was that sharp, I would have just kept it!

The sigma is cool, but I dont like it b/c its for 1.6 crop only.

Im looking into a 35L, but the price drives me away from it.

Isn't the 30mm idea that you can get the 50mm "standard view" feel on the crop bodies though?

Its looking like your right.
but looking through my galleries on smugmug there are a n awful lot of shots taken with my old sigma and its this that made me think about another one.
As i said the 50mm f/1.4 is the first lens i have owned that made me go WOW the first time i used it.

JaGWiRE
As for using it on a crop body, well to me the 50mm is longer than 30mm and thats it. it means nothing to me that its x1.6. ive never used a FF camera. i tend to look through the viewfinder and see if i like the FOV. and thats the problem. I do understand the crop issue, i just feel its meaning less to someone who cant compare it to a FF FOV
I do like both but im also forgetting that i have the 17-50 f/2.8 for most indoor shots. so that leaves the 50mm as a good gig lens (only smallish size gigs, maybe 100-300 people)

You know what - in the end you'll probably be happy with either. Due to your prior 30mm experience, you might be happier with the 50.

I think your spot on there. I feel i have to keep checking the 30mm shots as i take them where as with the 50mm (and my old 50mm f/1.8II) i had more confidence in them.

And that's key right there...I'd think you would be doing yourself a mental favor if you returned the 30.. Just foot zoom the 20mm diff!

Yup, those amazing photos you see here with those great lenses aren't just the lenses, it's the photographer too, haha.
