How much would the basic Cokin setup cost me? I just want a ND (the gradient one) for my kit lens.

About 45 bucks I think. You need the P holder, adapter ring, and filter. About 12-15 each. I think it works great!

So the only thing I would ever have to buy again is adapter rings for different lenses?

nah..only if your other lens has a biggerr thread
your 18-55 is 58 mm and thats what you get in the basic set.
I got mine for £28

i find on ebay that there are alot of Cokin filters but they dont look like official Cokin filters... is this the case? anyone can make a Cokin filter type??

I bought mine through 2filter.com... I got the Pro Z Series by Cokin... It's for my Tokina 12-24mm UWA (Ultra Wide Angle) Lens... The Pro Z can hold multiple filters at a time (three total to be exact)... Hehhehehe... But the one you have listed fits perfectly for your kit lens...

yea I dont wanna spend too much right now, I just wanna see the difference between using the system and bracketing in PS.

I just bought this system as well. Anything wider than 28mm will show vignetting on the P-series. B&H Photo sells the "Wide-angle" P series for anything below 28mm for like $11. It only holds on filter though, not 3. I use a 24-105 so the 4mm is fine. I can just step back 3 feet for those random occasions.

Will an ND2 help me with my sunsets or is it not strong enough? Does anyone have any pics using an ND filter?

Sunsets over a flat horizon (like the sea) would demand an ND2 or ND3 with a hard edge. Over an irregular horizon like a mountain range you'd want an ND2 or ND3 with soft edge so the transition isn't obvious.

Cokin P would be an OK system on the kit lens but the quality of the resin is poor and I certainly would not put one in front of an expensive lens. The good news is that high quality Singh-Ray filters fit the P system so you have an upgrade path for the future. Lee offer another high-quality system, but it is not compatible with the Cokin mount.

Well I picked up the Quantaray by Cokin P series with a ND2 (the only one they had) Im going to try to get some sunsets pics this evening so wish me luck.
