Sigh, I hate EF-S, but what do you think of this 17-55 IS lens.

Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Autofocus Lens for Select Digital Cameras

I told myself I would not buy another EF-S lens, because I want to get a 5D soon...

Whats killing me is that I want IS. the Canon L 24-70, no IS. My Tamron, no IS.

Personally I find and make good use of the IS feature. Can anyone else vouch for this lens?

What are my other options, I now im missing out on the 56-75 range my tamron is giving me, but im willing to sacrafise that.

The 1.6x crop factor will aournd for quite a while - efs lenses will be around for quite a while. Why worry? A bit of a gap in your lineup will not matter. If you want IS you only have so many choices. The 17-55 is a great lens.

You can always just buy that EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS now to 'get it out of your system', know that you can sell it later at a small loss.

Nothing wrong with running two systems. Keep the 17-55 on your 20D, upgrade to the 5D and put some other lenses on it.

I kept my 350D and the 60 macro is one of the lenses that is providing me a very good reason to keep it around.

I was hell bent on buying the 17-55 until I got my 5D, then I traded one stop for 24-105, because I feel IS is that useful. However, if you need both IS and 2.8, there is only one place to get it.

Canon may some day release a 24-70/2.8 IS - but till that day comes, you might want to hang on to your 20D.

Yeah, the 17-55 is peerless - there's nothing else like it for a 5D. You can buy it now and sell it if necessary, it'll keep the majority of its value in the foreseeable future.

The lens looks like a winner assuming 1.6 crop is here to stay. I have a 10-22 and im very happy with that lens as well.

Other than great optics, a very useable focal range, and non-blurry pictures the 17-55IS really doesn't have that much to offer;)

I've got two EF-S lenses now, the 10-22 & the 17-55. On a crop camera these are the lenses to have. It's better to buy what you need for now and sell it when you go full frame than to buy for full frame now w/o the benefits of the 17-55.

I just purchased mine from Adorama (http://www.adorama.com …rchinfo=17-55mm&item_no=4 (external link)) and saved a little money compared to BH. I have had it a week on my 350D/XT and love it.

There is something like it for a 5D, the 24-105L. Better range, slightly, IS, build quality, resale value and from a good copy great IQ. Only 4.0 the drawback.

Do you really think that you need IS on a lens this short? Seems it might be great for longer lenses, but I am not sure of the need for it in a shorter lens.

It's actually cheaper at B&H if you use the ppe06 search code. Here's the link...http://www.bhphotovideo.com …SA&addedTroughType=search (external link)

If you want the 5D and a 24-xx IS lens why don't you just buy the 5D and a 24-105 f/4 IS lens?

If money is the issue, forget about the 5D and get the 17-55. I'd rather take pictures with the camera I have than complain about the lens choice for the camera I don't have.

You can handhold w/o IS at 1/15 on crop with a 17mm lens. I don't understand what the huge demand for IS is. I can see it's utility on longer lenses, but on shorter... not as much.
