I placed the order this morning. I ordered the 17-40, 50mm 1.4, and a Bogen/Manfrotto Tripod (the 3021Pro with the 488RC2 midi ball head). I think I am really going to enjoy these new toys. I cannot wait for 3-5 days to pass, haha.

i own those two, they were my first and only purchase after the kit lens, they are superb performers, i think its wise to go for a fast prime to get those shots the 17-40 would not get in low light at f4.
if you look at my flickr page, all of tonights shots were taken with those two lenses, iwas delighted with their performance, if only my skill could match them lol :)

O yeah forgot to say , thats a wise choice, go for it!

Those were some nice shots. I really like the colors in them. Thanks for sharing.

I ordered the lenses, they are on track for delivery for Monday. They got to my city, not 20 miles from my house this morning at 5:29, BUT UPS does not deliver, nor let you pick up, on Saturday or Sunday! So, my lenses and tripod are not even 20 miles from my house and I have to wait 2 days to get them, this sucks, lol.

Only thing better is the 16-35L and 50 1.2L which will cost you an extra grand minimum. So yeah your choice is a very good one and optically it can't be much better then anything. Both lenses are wonderful!

the 16-35 is only better in that it is faster, but at 17mm the f4 zoom has a distinct edge on resolution , but the f2.8 lens is better at 35mm end. So I would not say that the 16-35 is better, only faster
