I like the kit lens....I couldn't understand why people hated it so much,i've got some great shots with it, the only thing it has against it is the fact that it isn't fast enough.

Back in the day I had a 20D with the kit lens. I "Upgraded" to the 17-40 f/4 L... Tripod tests and some pixel peeping gave me an epiphany. The optical quality of the L was better than the kit lens but my real tests were when I made some 13"x19" prints on my canon i9910 printer. When the pictures hit the paper there was almost no difference to be seen. Certainly not in a frame and hanging on the wall. This is very important to remember (if you want to be practical and thrifty). Yeah some really nice lenses look great in a signature block on a forum somewhere with tons of people you're never going to meet... but who cares if it's not making a difference in your results? my 3 cents. - Mike.

they actually vary in terms of IQ
the one i have is average
my fiancee's dad's was really soft at 18mm and just a little soft at 55
i sent his lens into canon and it came back really sharp through the whole range (not quite L quality but still pretty good)
your lens may vary

The kit lens is fine in ideal conditions but you will soon find the limits of this. Mainly sports and low light. Just shoot away and have fun with it.
