I like the kit lens....I couldn't understand why people hated it so much,i've got some great shots with it, the only thing it has against it is the fact that it isn't fast enough.

Tripod tests and some pixel peeping gave me an epiphany. The optical quality of the L was better than the kit lens but my real tests were when I made some 13"x19" prints on my canon i9910 printer. When the pictures hit the paper there was almost no difference to be seen. Certainly not in a frame and hanging on the wall. This is very important to remember (if you want to be practical and thrifty).
