First let me say that I know a wide range like this is not going to really lend itself to a "best" lens.

I am basically just looking for a vacation lens for when I am just farting around wiht my camera (as opposed to creating jaw dropping masterpieces on a daily basis) and need a walk around lens that I can just take some decent travel photos with.

anyone have any experience with any they would like to share?

A camera.

Well, I've owned the Tamron 28-300 which is suppose to be the best superzoom. But the one I got was garbage, I mean junk. Past 150mm it turned to mush and wide open at 300mm it looked like a 3 year old had gotten ahold of the camera.

But, I think I just had a bad copy...As I hear it does get soft at long range, but not like what I saw.

I also had the 18-200 Sigma, which wasn't that bad of a lens but it didn't have as much color or contrast as the 28-300.

I would say the Canon 28-200mm...It'll be my next walkabout lens.

itts much better to go with a two lens combo. my personal favorite would be a 17-70 sigma and then pretty much any 70/80-200/300/400 lens of your choice. i would go with the tokina 80-400 because i need supertele. but a 17-70 sigma and a 70-200 F4L or 70-300 IS would be a great vacation setup.

I have a Tamron 28-300 AF Apsherical XR DI LD and I find it to be a great walk around to the beach, Disney ect. Nice and sharp when stopped to F8.
Here is a picture I took at the beach earlier this year. If you are interested I might consider selling it as I have just sold my Rebel XT
