Killed the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM

There are reports now that the global deliveries have been slated for December. However, it is not clear what was that all about with January 2007 shipments.
On a different note......it is not clear to me at all how's this baby focusing...helicoid inner barrel extension, rear focusing group or what ?

Same as the 85L? Front group linear extension system?

may I ask what your preferred camera shop in To. is? I go there quite often and it would be interesting to know what the "Petkals" use.

Henry's Camera (Downtown Toronto Store).....but only for stuff that has a rather fair probability of having to be returned, such as the subject lens. However, their prices are significantly higher than B&H's and such. A very unusual exception to that is the 50 f/1.2 which is currently a bit cheaper at Henry's.

Otherwise, I normally go B&H all the way !

I have been assuming that all along miself.

Without reading the last few posts, is there a big difference between the expected arrival times between USA and Canada? Jeepers, if so, just have someone in the US buy and send it up to you.

No big differences, in principle. Canon USA owns Canon Canada.....their new product release should be coordinated.

More indoor photos (some kinda Canon horse&pony show again) with the 50 f/1.2 on DPR forum.
If I was told those were taken with the 50 f/1.4, I would have believed it.

I suspect it is mostly (if not only) the innocents as well as lunatics who buy lenses for their look and L build. However, how large can that dunce market segment really be ? Enough to sustain a continuing production of an expensive lens which performance-wise might turn out to be merely a 1/2 stop faster version of the 50 f/1.4 ?

It will be interesting to see all that unfold. The lens should be out by mid December ....give Castleman a week or so and I betcha he'll be posting his test results by Y/E.

Just checked them - paper-thin DOF, that's for certain. A few in-focus ears and OOF faces.
Except for the longer shot later in the thread, it renders background blur very nicely.
It'll be interesting to see how it measures up in terms of color, contrast, flare, and distortion when compared to its' "peers".

It's worth seeing what William Castleman and possibly others have to say about the lens.

When you get yours, Peter, send it to me. I'll test it out against the 18-55 f3.5-5.6 and if everything goes right, the kit lens will kick its overpriced ar*e.

Barring anything unforeseen, I'll get one. If I don't like it, I'll sell it. If I lose a couple hundred dollars in the exchange, so be it. It won't be the most expensive mistake I've made in my life.

Hey fella's ... don't you think you are putting too much pressure on this Willing Castlemain bloke? He's only a human being after all but he is being erected to God status I'd trust JoJo first anyway. He has cute kids so he must be doing something right.

Castleman ? I do not know that dood from a hole in he wall.
However, judging by some of his past reviews (e.g. 300 's , 85 and 50's compared) a test of the new 50 will be right in his alley.
Read those old reviews.....see, he ain't exactly an impressionable lad, is he ?

He's got some respectable astrophotography images, as well as gymnastics images buried in his web page as well. He's a Prof of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Florida (which means little in terms of photography). I have one of his shots (the Lunar Eclipse Composite), awaiting framing after I get moved and settled.

He does intend to test the 50/1.2 when he gets one. Hopefully, that will be soon!

The other option is to commission that other lens connoisseur maitre A. Remford.....he is probably not the most active POTN member these days, however, he does appear uniquely qualified to do statistically significant comparative tests of the following kind: 50 f/1.2(sample 1) vs. 50 f/1.2 (sample 2) vs. 50 f/1.0 (sample 1) vs. 50 f/1.0(sample 2) vs. 50 f/1.0 (sample 3).
