I'm looking for a prime lens in the range of 30-50mm to shoot basketball with. I already have the sub $100 Canon 50mm, and it's not performing well. My camera is an EOS 20D. I'd like something with a max aperture of f2 or wider. And it should have a reasonably fast autofocus as I shoot in AI Servo mode all the time. I don't want to spend more than $300.

Any suggestions?

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX or Canon 50mm f/1.4 are pretty much your only choices if you want decent AF speed and for around $300.

How did you happen to arrive at the 30-50mm range for basketball shots?

Only prime for under $300, faster than f2, and shorter than 50mm is the Sigma 28mm f1.8. I bought mine from Tristate for about $260 and am happy with the lens.
Take a look here.

I use my 85 1.8 under the hoop all the time...its where I get my best shots. If you want a WHOLE body then use a little foot zoom, but you dont need much distance...I have the 50 1.4 as well, and while I like the lens, I dont like it so much for basketball...
