I'd like to test my second copy of the 100-400 IS with a 2x TC, but it's rainy here in Manila so shots in good light is not possible today.

However, this Brown Shrike presented an opportunity to have hand holding fun in low light, so I took many bursts at it with the hope that at least one will be recognizable.

Here's one of the better ones of about 60 fun shots - 1DM2 + 100-400 IS + Tamron 2x TC, 800 mm, f/11 (wide open), ISO 800, 1/40 sec, manual exposure, hand held but supported by window sill:

Fantastic capture given the condition and the setup. Well done Romy.

Very nice result. I'll be looking forward to see how it performs in better lighting. Great shot!

Speaking as a birder more than a photographer I think that this is a first-rate shot of this species. At ISO 800, 1/40th sec and hand-held it is a miracle.

Real nice picture Romy. Looks like you get great depth of field with that combo. Why your second copy?

That really is very impressive! I shall have to give my 100-400 a go with the 2x.

Thanks for the inspiration :)

My sentiments exactly, Paul - this changes everything!

;)

Mitch, Romy has scored a 100-400mm which is as sharp, to all intents and purposes, as his 400mm f/5.6 - and this is some of the evidence.

I'd be happy with this from my 100-400mm on its own!

Keith, after having mine rebuilt by Canon, it's as sharp as that. Maybe you need it calibrated?

Oh, I'm happy with mine, Mitch - I'm just making the point that Romy's shot here is amazing, especially given that there's a 2x converter in there, 800 ISO and MF.
