Hi,

It's been a while, ... but the weather wasn't really cooperative

What do you guys think of this one? I was sitting in my living room when my wife said that this was worth a shot. When I looked up I had to agree :)

I'm quite new to Photography and haven't shot a lot of Landscapes yet, so I am looking to imporve.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom,

This is what I would call a typical snapshot.

Here's what i think could have improved the shot:

-since the sky colours are beautiful you could have added something in the foreground too. No you just have a black area with zero detail and interest from the viewer's viewpoint
-the overall picture looks noisy. This can be due to ther resizing of the picture or a too high ISO value. Try lowering the ISO.
- try to look deeper at composition rules and principles. Once learned they could really help you take better shots.

The colors in the bottom half of the sky are really good, but I think there is too much grey area above that. Also the row of trees seem to be out of focus. Were you using a tripod? For landscapes it's normally a good idea, especially in low light situations like this.

thanks for the comments, ...

Yes I know it's quite noisy. But I shot it with ISO 800, which should normally be ok. I think this is where I will test NoiseNinja, ... :D

Do you know where I can find some info on Landscape composition rules.
In this case there was really nothing but a fence in the forground.

No, no tripod. It went really fast and I think had I run to get it from the basement the sunset would have gone.

Cheers,
Tom

Google can help you out (or there are plenty of magazines on beginner's photography), but this thread is excellent for advice. It's a hash of info presented by people on these boards:

I don't have a comment on the shot really, but I just have to say that I LOVE this forum and reading all the C&C's have really helped me learn so much more than I ever could from a book. You guys are so patient and willing to give such friendly and honest advice!
