got it yesterday, installed nifty, 5 out of the 10 pics I've taken received error 99? I simply r&r battery to resolve. Is this an inherent malfunction with "some" of these? I did search but don't have a clear understanding of this quirk? Thanks for any advice.:) seems quite generic, I'v reseated the nifty and taken some shots with no error? I guess I'll just have to watch..

Unfortunately there is not going to be a one fix solves all answer as ERR99 is a catch all error code and can have multiple causes. However there are some steps you can take and they have been used successfully by some. If this is happening on only one lens then the likelihood is that the body is fine and the cause is in the lens. If this is a brand new lens the easiest thing would be to exchange it for another. But before you do there is one easy thing you can try and that is to clean the contacts of the 50 with a pencil eraser. This has helped many as sometimes the contacts oxidize and have poor connectivity. It is pretty straight forward and easy to do just take care so that the eraser leavings do not fall into the lens. If this doesn’t work and exchange is not possible the next step will be to work the issue with Canon service as there is little else you can do.

I read some of your posts on this issue:( Hoping it was just having to R&R the lens. I'm expecting another lens tomorrow so that should give me more results.

Yea, I had a bunch of them but I am happily ERR99 free and have been for quite some time now. :D Good luck and hopefully all it needed was to be reseated a time or two and the problem goes away. BTW, I did pick up some of the DeOxit from Caig as one POTS member had suggested and about once a month clean the contacts with it. I don’t know if it has helped my camera, but I do know that I cleaned my old VCR heads with it as well and the improvement in picture quality was remarkable. I have since then cleaned my PCs video card contacts, memory contact, and even a problematic cordless phone. The phone was having trouble charging. When you returned it to the cradle, we had to jostle it around a bit until you finally saw the recharge light come on. After cleaning the contacts with a dab of the DeOxit we no longer have to do that.

I had this problem on two occasions now...One was the grip contact and the other was the 24-105 contact. Removed and replaced a couple of times and has worked since...

I get error 99 occasionally. It seems more prevalant with my Tamron 70-300 but it goes in spates. It won't happen for a long time then suddenly I'll get nothing but error 99. Then - without removing the battery or cleaning the contacts - it'll suddenly go away.
