I know I know...not another post about a kid wondering what lense to buy...but i am in need of some advice. With christmas coming around i need to decide between the nifty fifty and a sigma 10-20mm. I know a lense itself cannot be "fun" but im wondering what lense would you guys get as far as creativity goes. I shoot everything...landscapes, school functions, ice hockey, practically anything. I have personally used the sigma 10-20mm on a nikon for about 15 minutes and i really like the wide angle it gives. On the other hand...i like to not use flash...ever..and thats where the 50mm low light capabilites come in. So to get to the point..what do you guys think?

why not both??? the 50/1.8 is $70...just stretch your wallet a little more? ;)

i think the 50 would make for some creative exposures, while the sigma would offer you more in terms of composition. both will offer the ability to take creative/stunning shots, so you'll have to ask whether you find yourself asking for wider angles or lower light capabilities.

18mm seems wide enough for my own personal use, but might not be for you. so...giving you a choice would mean little without some more info on your shooting styles. :)

Personally I would take the 50 1.4 over both those lenses. Sure the 10-22 would be fun, but is it useful in everyday shots? I hate using a flash too, the 50 1.4 is great indoors without a flash! Much better in my mind then the nifty fifty, quicker AF and much better MF.

They really are different lenses for different purposes. I'd go for the Sigma if you want to do wide stuff or the 50mm if you want a short tele for portraits and low light work.

I would go with the 50 1.4..low light situations are always fun to photograph...parties, get-to-gethers with friends, ect...

hmm thanks for the info. Maybe instead of the 10-20mm ill go with the 50 1.4 and a grip...sounds a bit better. I appreciate the help!

I'd go for both. But the superwide is probably going to give you the most fun.

On a crop camera the 50mm lenses are pretty much just portrait lenses.

go for the sigma, and buy the nifty yourself, it makes economic sense lol! :)

i have the 50 1.4, its a great lens no scratch that its a stellar lens! i used it tonight at a christmas parade only the streetlight was available, short winter days and all, but i bumped the iso threw it wide open and hey presto near daylight- i used it for a street parade, which the 50 on a 1.6 crop is quite good at.
What you have to remember is that its really an 80mm lens on a crop. However when it got to the firework display i had to put on the 17-40L, this is the creativeness you are after with a wide angle lens, the convenience of a zoom at the wide end- the 50 was just too cropped and wouldnt cut it, but the wide angle gave me the shot i needed.
I am just trying to give you an example of how i used my lenses. They are the only 2 i own (shamefully covers 18-55 lol), each has their strengths but sadly they each have their weaknesses.

the 50 would be great on indoor sports, but you wouldnt get the wide field of play, a wide angle zoom maybe too slow for indoors, but you could get great distortion effects and cram a whole lot more into your scene- the sigma you refer to, and the canon 10-22 are what i am currently weighing up for my next purchase.

17-40

it doesnt get any easier after you graduate and find a job lol!!
I think its only the pros and the retired that get to have all the fun buying new toys!

I dont know what your thoughts are on the canon 10-22 but i have found it to be the same price as the sigma if you import if from hongkong.

im not familiar with the canon 10-22, but my friend has the sigma on a nikon D100 and the lense seems very sturdy and i just really like the pictures that he gets. this shot of his is probably what inspired me...

I guess you are just after the wide vers of the lens, but i would look at the value for money, the canon optic is highly regarded, and it is a new build lens. I have read many threads on here that canon make less bad copies than sigma and tamron.
I havent as yet tried either brand in this range, but once ihave found the cheapes prices i will experiment a little at the shops.

Hi,

My advice is to go with the 10-22MM. It is clearly the more "fun" of the two lenses you referenced. Given your current lenses the 10-22MM also improves on your overall focal ranges you will have to experiment with.

You always have a birthday coming up for the nifty fifty :-)

I love my 10-20. I use it much more often than my 50mm. Of course, I've also got a midrange zoom.

@like a:
What are you tying to say???
No experience by yourself, just reading posts and then stating the cryptic "new built lens" is quite questionable - are the other ones used lenses????

Two bodies left, some "soso" lenses, and still a lot of gear.....
