The fiance keeps bugging me to choose which lens i want for christmas, i have the canon 28 f1.8,85 f1.8,100 2.8 macro on the list. But now im getting a lil red in the face with L fever. I've got nearly $400 saved after selling 2 of my lenses. Im wondering if i should just forgoe the primes and just say give me the money and put it towards the Canon 24-105 f/4 L. Im getting gift cards for my bday (2 weeks) and christmas. So i could always go back and get the primes.

3 primes or 1 L?

What do you want to shoot? Do you want fast, sharp lenses, or do you want convenience?

i wouldn't do the 100 and 85. the 100 can be used for both portraits and macro, so I doubt you'd ever use the 85. You could put that toward a 50 1.4

as for prime vs zoom, that personal preference. the 24-105 is great, but you'll lose the macro abilities and low light abilities But not having to bring extra gear and change lenses is quite appealing to some.

The 24-105 is one of the best general purpose L lenses going. You have the kit lens if you ever need wider.

Read some reviews - The Digital Picture (external link) is always a great place for a drool !

Primes are good BUT you have the thrifty 50 as it is, and the ones on your list, apart from the special uses for the macro, are all pretty much covered by the 24-105, and you'll be constantly swapping lenses, foot zooming and IMO getting frustrated. Modern zooms are superb quality and the extra versatility they add is unbeatable.

Im not concerned really with low light. If i take any night shots it will be long exposure anyway. I sold the sigma 24-135 that i had, and boy am i missing it already. I think i'll continue my savings and get the L lens. Maybe the fiance will surprise me anyway. who knows. i hate making decisions.

macro is fun, plus you can use it for other things. none of the other lenses are dual duty.

Looking at your lens lineup, i would recommend a walkaround - a 24-105 does look like a good bet.

In the right direction to an empty wallet......or a tighter leash on spending!!

I'd say go for the zoom. I think it would fill in a good gap for you. Then you can always go to primes. But if you don't mind buying used, i'd say look at what's being sold. If you can find a 100 2.8 Macro on sale and/or 50 1.4, go for it. Or 85 1.8.

I vote for the 24-105L, its versatility wins out, and its a high quality lens, you won't be dissapointed
