Thanks grego, I guess it's like anything new (especially anything connected with photography) you want to get the best out of it straight out of the box! and the slightest thing that doesn't seem "just right" makes you stop and wonder whether spending all that money was the right choice (I'm CERTAIN it was!) - but I should know better that it just doesn't happen without some RTFM

You'll get used to it. I'd say in about 2 weeks you can look at this post and laugh. I trust you'll be a happy camper by the end of a months worth of time. Congratulations on your purchase, btw.

ping one 1 series owner :D its a lot faster dont know why you are having this problem are you using the same lense ?? also instead of wafting it around use a fixed target

Thanks Zilly, but I wasn't "wafting it around" , I was simply focusing on different objects, alternately near and far, so that it forced the AF to refocus between button presses. I've re-tried it this morning - yes already! (well you do dont you) and it certainly seems quicker than last night.

I'll try it outside when (or should that be if!) it brightens later.

[EDIT: Thats a joke, I've just seen the forecast for today, it's going to heave it down - they reckon this body's water resistant - looking at the forecast, it should be waterPROOF!]

....but to me the 1dmk2 is not as good as people think it is...

Thanks Rob, you sure do know how to cheer a guy up who's just exchanged his arms and legs for a piece of photographic equipment!! :(

My only problem now is working out a way to press the damn buttons (and carry it around!) :D

I don't know, my first time out with the 1D2N (on the way home with it, heh) I was able to capture birds in flight ridiculously easy.

Your lenses are certainly up to the task... Cheaper, slower lenses don't really let it shine.

I use a 1DMKIIn, a 20D and an XT for shooting all types of sporting events. A couple weeks ago we were shooting a baseball game and I typically use the MKII with a 300 2.8 but I needed to use the 70-200 2.8 for some shots so I traded cameras with my other photographer for a while. What a difference I noticed in focus speed. I was waiting on the 20D and thinking man this use to seem fast but now after shooting the MKII it seemed slow. My other photographer commented on how fast the MKII was but was not impressed with the weight of the MK with the 300mm. Mind you I was not using the same lens on each camera but I know that the 70-200 2.8 is not a slow lens. Both cameras were set up the same on AI-servo single point focus and we the * button to focus the camera not the shutter release.

I have found that the MKII is slower in low light situations and in some gyms has problems getting focused fast enough but in daylight it is very fast.

Just my 2 cents worth.

A 1D series is slower in low light then a 20D. The 20D goes down to EV -1, and the 1D to EV -0,5 IIRC. Chuck Westfall commented on this here (external link) and here (external link)

Good point...

Attaching a Speedlite or ST-E2 however, lets either camera focus in total darkness. :)

I actualy had my 550EX on top of the 1d last night, but it still seemed to struggle a little.

Anyhow, it WAS my intention to go out with it today, as I've got two big shoots over the weekend, but I've been that busy editting photo's today, and it's heaving down with rain outside (yes, I KNOW it's water resistant - it's just that I'm not), that I just haven't had time.

Oh well, there always in the morning - or I can practice at the first gig! :D

Thanks everyone.

I've just bookmarked these for later reading, thank you for that.

That seems to be a concensus of opinion, yet you wouldn't (on the face of it) expect that to be the case. Thanks for your input.

Sure, but from the second link I posted: "Even under the most ideal shooting conditions such as the use of a fast wide-angle lens with a contrasty subject and the presence of a 550EX AF Assist beam with One-Shot AF and center-point focusing, it may take an EOS camera almost a full second to lock focus on the subject in extremely low light."

I have both the 20D and the 1DMKIIN - I can't speak for speed so much, but I do know that my 1D is much more accurate when focusing than the 20D.
